1st Trimester

worried now..

I was having horrible anxiety around week 7.  When I went for my 8 week appointment, my OB prescribed me ativan.  In the last week and a half, I have taken the smallest dosage, around 1 a day.  Now I am freaking out that it is going to affect the baby.  I know my doctor prescribed it but everything I read says ativan is a no-no during pregnancy.  I also drank chamomile tea a few times and just read something that says that is bad as well.

I am freaking out since my 11 week appointment is coming up and Im worried something may have happened from taking the meds.  I am starting to wean off them since I feel a little less anxious.  Should I be concerned about taking the meds already?

Re: worried now..

  • Try not to worry.  That will just make it worse.  If your doctor didn't think it was safe, he/she wouldn't have prescribed it.  I learned with my 1st pregnancy that while Google can be your friend, it can also be your worst enemy.  Lay off the reading for awhile and you'll feel better.  :)

  • Try not to worry!  I've been sick with a number of illnesses during my first tri and have been on so many meds - many of which google and other people on this board said not too!  I worried about it all too, but my Dr has Ok'd every one on them, and I trust that after as many years as she's been doing this, she knows what she's talking about.  I also believe (again based on research and convos with my Dr) that some of the questionable meds are ok as long as there is not pro-longed exposure.

That said, anxiety is one of those things that be difficult to controll normally (I suffer from it too!), so it's better to manage it the best way possible (even if that means with meds) so that you can stay focused on what's important and not cause yourself additional and often unnecessary stress.  GL!

  • Your doctor wouldn't have given it to you if it wasn't safe.  It if calms your mind, call your doctor on monday and ask if there is something else that you can take because you are concerned for your baby.
  • Of course not taking anything is better than taking something, but if you need it and your doctor prescribed it, you're fine.

Can you take a half a pill?  I know some pills you're not supposed to split in half, but maybe that will make you feel better.

    And relax!  Smile

  • Try not to worry since that will only make the anxiety worse.  If your Dr. ok'd the med it is probably safe.  Maybe you should try something else to help you relax a little (like yoga, etc.).  I know it's not the same as meds and that anxiety is a very real thing, but maybe channeling your energy in a better direction would be helpful.  Also, like pp said, try not to google anything.  I learned that the hard way.
