Non-judgmental clicky poll

I'm not looking to debate circ vs non, just curious what the numbers are. I have heard that about 75% of Americans circumcise.

If you're Team Green, answer as if you're having a boy.

Re: Non-judgmental clicky poll

  • I love the last option.

  • I let DH decide.  He was anti-circ, but after talking to our OB and considering it for a long time, we decided to go ahead and snippity snip snip.

  • We're having a girl, but if we were having a boy we would get him circumcised.

  • I have to admit, I'm SO torn on this issue.  I mean I don't care if people do or don't.  It makes no difference to me. For me, I see both sides...and I would love a rational discussion why people are or aren't and what made them decide.

     My reasons (for and against)

    Reason not to for me:

    - i don't want to inflict pain on the little one so early in life.  They say it feels like a little prick etc, and that it only hurts for a few days, but WHO told them that? That baby?

-my husband isn't and he's never had a problem.  He keeps it clean.  The only thing is, will my son be as OCD as my husband about it, because (TMI) if it's not super clean it does smell icky (I know.. TMI) and I make him go shower.    LO could be lazy, earth crunchy hippy that doesn't want to shower when he's older, and it could cause problems.

    - Reason to

i also don't want him to be made fun of.  My brother in law said that he'll be in locker rooms and get teased and in this day and age, don't we all have enough to tease about?

and before anyone tells me these are ridiculous reasons for either way, My husband IS NOT circumcized and so we would think it would be easier to teach little one to pee etc if he looked like daddy.

  • Yeah, that was TMI  :)

But the pain issue is sort of a mute point...I mean, show me one person who remembers any physical pain they felt at a day old?  Before anyone gets pissed, I'm not trying to say that babies should have pain inflicted on them, but it's a medical procedure and it's your choice.  I along with most others have had very painful medical procedures, and that pain was really not a factor in the decision making.  I do see your point with your hubby not being done...I have a funny pinky toe that I would love to get fixed (runs in my family), but if my baby ended up having it, I would feel bad that I got mine fixed and theirs was not.

  • Circ. Big brother & Dad are, so it just makes sense for us. It does make me cringe though when i think of LO going through the procedure. No mommy wants to think their LO is in pain.
  • You're so thoughtful with the last option! I hate not being able to answer a clicky poll because I wanna see how my vote would count! (But I could answer this one anyway.)
  • I personally can see arguments in favor or against.  I left it up to DH.

  • I *think* I read that the rate of circumcision is lower on the east and west coasts - as it's becoming a "trend" to not circumcise.

    DD3 - 3.28.11
  • I am getting our little guy snipped. I'm Jewish, so it's traditional, but even if I weren't I'd do it. My reasons are that it's more hygienic, is more visually appealing to most American women, and DH is circ'ed. Even men who are good about keeping their foreskins clean have a bad smell down there if they haven't showered recently. I've had boyfriends who weren't circ'ed and I was always a little bit grossed out by it. I never performed oral sex on them, but I did with circ'ed boyfriends and do with DH. My female friends all seem to feel the same way. I just don't want my baby boy to have to worry about cleaning himself all the time, and as much as I don't want to actually think about, I do want him to have a fulfilling sex life as adult without having to worry that women are thinking his junk is gross.

As far as the pain, yes, it will hurt him, but I've seen it done countless times and the baby seems more upset by the cold antiseptic going on than by the cutting, which is extremely quick. The babies usually calm down pretty quickly when they are given back to Mom to BF. Other things will hurt, too, like getting his shots. I can't shield him from pain forever.

What I heard (from a pedi on Pregtastic) is that the highest rates are in the Northeast and Midwest (Northeast may be bc of a higher population of Jewish families). The lowest rates are in the South and West, probably partly because Hispanics have very low circ rates (less than 25%) and AA's have an 'intermediate' rate.

  • I left the descision up to DH- he didn't even hesitate. "Of course we will."

    Good enough for me.

  • DH thinks it's a good idea.  Cleaner and such.  I read one story where a guy didn't have it done when he was born and ended up with an infection and had to spend time in the hospital to have it done when he was 8.  Doesn't sound like fun.

  • We will.

My sister is a pediatric nurse and works in surgery recovery. The amount of 10-14 year old boys that come in for circumcision is HUGE. Like 25% of all her patients or something crazy. It very painful for a 14 year old, not to mention embarassing to have to have it done and then have a nurse look you over while in recovery. She feels really bad for those boys. Much easier to just have it done right after birth and be done with it.
