So I did pack a diaper bag already thinking I would bring it to the hospital just incase. Now I haven't had to do this before so does this sound like it covers the basics:
Usually hospitals provide diapers. Make sure you pack a bring home outfit for baby, a coat or snowsuit depending on where you live and weather. Pacifier. That should do it. Don't forget the car seat lol
I didn't bring any of it! Nursery provided the diapers (and special wipes) for DD's. I just changed baby using the bed pads that they give you (for you). What I brought for babies: coming home outfit, blankets.
Just an FYI- at my hospital i brought a snow suit for my daughter and when I was putting her in her car seat to take her out they made me take it off her. They said they do not allow you to use them because 1) the baby could overheat in it and 2) it does not allow the car seat straps to fit properly. I had no idea. I am not sure if this is just my hospital but I thought I would let you know in advance that it could be an issue.
You really need very little at the hospital... mine had pacifiers, diapers, wipes, blankets, hats. Mine also requires baby to stay in hosptial attire for safety reasons. I didn't use a single thing in my diaper bag except the coming home outfit. We changed diapers on the bed or in the bassinet.

No it's not just your hospital. Anyone who knows anything about car seats (car seat inspectors/installers, nurses, etc) will tell you...Never put baby in a coat before putting them in the car seat. They can/will over heat and the strap won't fit them correctly. It's recommended that you wait until you get to where you are going to put on baby's coat. I know it sounds like a pain, but it's for the safety of your baby.
Re: 2nd time mama's ? for you
Everyone is different and will have different advice based on their kids/experiences, but....
I would add:
Pacifier (if you plan to use one)
Change of clothes (put it in a ziplock bag so you have something to seal the dirty clothes in if you ever need to use the spares)
Blanket
Small toy (for a newborn can be something that even clips onto their car seat)
nursing cover (if you plan to bf).
blue bags to put dirty diapers in
I would eliminate:
baby powder (not healthy for babies)
bib (you might need it down the road, but most newborns don't spit up enough at first to need a bib and food isn't an issue).
i agree with both of txsweetheart posts. add scratch mittens
