Preemies

Grey's Anatomy

Ugh. If anyone watched tonight they had a 30 week preemie in the NICU (when did surgeons become neonatologists anyway? I digress...). Alex said that the baby was only 30 weeks so didn't have a good shot at survival. UGH. How annoying. Plus their interpretation of kangaroo care was a little odd. Sooooo funny how shows can be inaccurate about stuff.

Re: Grey's Anatomy

  • I don't watch, but one of LOs primaries does. I'll have to ask her about it.  One of the Neonatologists at our hospital looks like Patrick Dempsey 20 years from now- he even sounds like him.

  • Well, he was a 30 weeker who'd had a stroke, so I think that played into the odds thing, but yeah. The kangaroo thing was a little eye-roll-worthy.

Honestly, nothing is ever as bad as the episode of Private Practice where the preemie was born and Addison saved the day by getting the baby to breathe water. I wanted to throw things at the TV.

  • Oh yeah I know the stroke thing was a factor but when he was talking about it, he didn't mention the stroke and I was like, I hope people don't watch this and think that 30 weekers have a slim chance at life. I hate it but I am sooo sensitive about preemie and infertility stuff on TV - they're always so inaccurate!!
  • I was just coming on here to post about this....I love grey's and I know everything isn't medically correct because it's tv...but...this hit a nerve with me since we've all had experience with this.  Heck, Carter was 33 weeks and basically no problems besides eating, growing and maintaining temperature.....

a)we could only kangaroo an hour a day at the beginning...not for like 48 hours straight

b)when the mom came in and held the baby - where were her tubes and wires getting in the way

  • yeah. the IF stuff kills me Again, Private Practice is a horrible offender there, too. Ugh.

And yeah.. I kept looking for a ventilator or something. At one point she says to put the baby on CPAP.. but.. uh.. I never saw a CPAP mask. Or tubes or wires of any sort, really.

They really need a medical advisor on the show.

Try watching that new Three Rivers show and having transplant experience! OMG, DH made me stop watching, I got so MAD! LOL

  • i watched it too & gave alex's version of kangaroo care the side eye.  and yeah, a 30 weeker with a slim chance at survival was a little odd too.  even with all the inaccuracies, i could not help but cry when the mom finally held the baby.  but, i was also wondering where all the wires & tubes were.
  • The comment about the baby only being 30 weeks got to me as well. All for show I guess.

  • I was holding LO while watching the show, I had just fed her and was giving her some cuddle/tummy time.  It ended with me hugging her and sobbing when the Mom first got to see the baby.  LO just looked up at me and smiled.. which made me cry even more.
  • I normally don't watch that show but I'll have to watch that episode. I'm curious how they portrayed the NICU experience!
  • Those of you that are FB friends with me know how I reacted. F*ing Grey's. That was the stupidest thing EVER! Seriously, you just take a 30 weeker off breathing support because it doesn't have a good chance? Morons need to get a clue.

  • I saw some of it last night.  Going to watch the whole thing tonight.  But I agree.  I hate it when shows have preemies on and they say they will not make it because the baby was born early.  I always see it on discovery health too.  Their's a whole board here of preemies that are doing just fine :)
  • couldn't agree with you ladies more.  Grey's needs a clue and a medical advisor.  I almost lost it when Alex said the baby was going to die since it was born at 30 weeks.  I know about the whole stroke thing but c'mon...

Right after I saw that baby, I went upstairs and checked on my LO.  She needed another kiss goodnight.  :)

Honestly, it didn't even look like a NICU at all. It was way lame.

  • I just watched my DVR'd Greys...  Was that seriously the only baby in the NICU?  Plus, all I could think of was - where are the wires and tubes?
