Preemies

New mom with preemie born 23.5 weeks

Hi,

This is my first post to the preemie board.  I delivered our little girl on October 20 at just 23.5 weeks.  She weighed 1 lb and 6 oz and was 11.5 inches long.  I went into pre-term labor 5 days earlier due to what they called an incompetent cervix.  I was immediately hospitalized in the hopes that I could make it to at least 24 weeks or more.  At the time they didn't give us much hope.  We were so scared after hearing all of the statistics of the number of babies that survive being born so early and of the complications that occur with premature babies. But we didn't give up hope.  We tried for five years and went through 5 IVF's to conceive our child and just could not let ourselves give up on her.  It has now been 14 days and our little Stella Grace is a fighter and doing as well as can be expected right now given her situation.  Since she was born, I have heard some wonderful success stories of babies born premature.  I was on some of the other Bump Message Boards during my IF days and the 1st and 2nd trimesters of my pregnancy and got some wonderful advice.  When I saw there was a Preemie board and just knew I could come here and get some support from other mom's who have been where I am.  I would love to hear success stories of other micro-preemies that would help give us hope as we are just beginning our NICU journey and roller coaster ride.  Thanks.

  • Congrats on the birth of your baby and welcome to the board.  Everyone here is wonderful and has great advice so feel free to ask any questions or vent here.

I went into pre-term labor at 24 weeks and was diagnosed with IC also. My son was born at 26 weeks.  He is now 4 years old and has had no problems from being so early.  My best advice is to take each day one at a time and celebrate the little milestones.  I would also advise you to start a blog.  It is a good way to keep family and friends updated without constantly having to relay information.  Also it is wonderful to be able to look back on and see how far your baby has come.

  • Welcome to the board! Congratulations on your little one.

My son was born at 26w, at 1lb 7oz. The NICU journey is a very hard one, particularly for the micros, but they can really amaze us as well. Hang in there and please let us know if you have any questions or just need to cry or vent.

  • What an amazing journey you are on!  Hang in there.

In the NICU my children roomed with one other baby, Xavier who was a 23.5 wkr.  I am happy to report Xavier is at home and doing great.  It took a long time (she was there late Apr to late Sept) but he is home and is thriving!  I keep in touch with his mom.

  • Love the name!  ;)

I agree that starting a blog (we had a caringbridge blog) is a good idea to keep everyone updated.

Taking it one day at a time (sometime 1 hour or even 1 minute at a time) is the best way to make it through her stay in the NICU.  We still, even at home, just celebrate making it through each day.

These babies are truly miracles and after the struggle you went through to conceive, I have faith that your baby is a fighter & will pull through.  Sounds like she has a pretty amazing mommy!  Hang in there!

  • Congratulations on your precious little angel. The NICU is definitely a roller coaster, so get ready.  Like pp stated, celebrate all the little milestones along the way.  My lo was a little older, born at 28 weeks and weighed 1lb 7 oz and was 12.5 in.(IUGR due to placenta quit working).  He is now 19 weeks old, 7 adjusted and doing well.  This board is wonderful and full of great moms who are here to help you through anything.  Welcome.
  • Welcome!

My daughter was born at 24w3d but was the size of a 22 weeker at 14.8 ounces.   She is now 2 3/4 and still has some issues but she's doing quite well.

Please feel free to email me at lifeinthenicu@gmail.com if you want to talk :)

    Take care!

  • My water broke at 23w1d and DD was born at 27w3d at 2lbs, 3oz - we didn't think we'd ever get here, but she's coming home this week after a long NICU stay.  This board has been a HUGE source of information and support for me and I second the caringbridge site - it's been a great way to keep everyone informed without having to send out a ton of emails.

    Good luck!!!

  • Congratulations!

Brandon was born at 26 weeks, 1 day. He weighed 1 pound, 14 ounces and was 13 inches long. I was originally pregnant with twins (after IVF) and my sac on Brandon's twin ruptured at 19 1/2 weeks. I delivered her at 20 1/2 weeks and then wound up staying pregnant with Brandon until 26 weeks, 1 day when he was delivered.

Brandon is 16 months old today and doing great. He is at least 20 pounds and is starting to take some steps on his own. He has been crawling since July.

Brandon was in the NICU for 12 weeks, he came home 2 weeks before his due date. There were a lot of ups and downs in the NICU which is typical but today he is a happy, healthy baby.

Conceived twins with IVF January 2008. Lost baby a at 20 1/2 weeks due to premature rupture of membranes and held onto baby b. Baby b (Brandon) born at 26 weeks and 1 day on July 5, 2008. • Congrats to you, and she sounds like such a little fighter.  Kudos to you for being so strong and positive, it will definitely help! :-)
  • Congrats and welcome!  It sure sounds like Stella has already shown you that she's a strong little girl! :)

I went to the hospital at 24w2d due to an incompetent cervix also.  Against the odds (I'm told), I didn't deliver until 26w2d (2 lb 3 oz).  Andrew is 10 months old now and he's doing amazingly well!

You'll find lots of support on this board and there are some 23 weeker success stories!

  • Congratulations on your beautiful daughter! I too gave birth to my babies early after a super complicated pregnancy following many, many IF treatments. I'm sorry that everything had to be so hard for you too.

My babies were born at 25w5d. You can read their story on my baby blog. They spent 95 and 99 days in the NICU but are now home and doing great! While we were there, my son was in a room with a little boy born at 23w1d and 1 lb 1 oz. He went home the last week in September and is thriving! Hang in there! It is a hard, hard journey, but well worth it in the end. And I truly believe that it makes you a stronger person and a better mommy.

  • Congrats on your baby girl! The NICU is a long, hard road but it is so worth it in the end. Welcome to the board!
  • Congrats on the birth of your daughter.  Love the name too (my daughter is named Ella Grace!)  She was a 30 weeker but very small at 2lb 5 oz.  The NICU is tough but you will get through it.  Ella was there for 68 days and while it was hard it was totally worth it.  Ella is now almost 10 lbs and thriving at home.  There was a 15 oz baby that was Ella's neighbor in the NICU and he has a long road but was doing great.  You will be in my thoughts.

  • I have a daughter born at 27 weeks.  She is now 18 months old and is doing really well.  I also have a niece born at 26 weeks.  She is now 4 years old and fluent in two languages!!  Nothing can stop these preemies.  You will be amazed every day at what they are able to overcome.  Come here often.  Everyone is such a huge support and chances are that any obstacles your little girl may face during her NICU stay, someone here has had experience with.

  • Congratulations!  Sounds like both Stella and her parents are fighters!  My DS was born at 27w5d - 2 pounds, 13.5 inches.  He is 17 months now - walking and doing amazingly well developmentally.  You can read all about his journey through the NICU and his progress on our blog - https://walkersitb.blogspot.com.   This board is extremely helpful - I wish I had found it while we were still in the NICU.  Best of luck to you.
  • Congratulations on your baby girl.
