Babies: 9 - 12 Months

WWYD: Gagging/Vomtting with puree issue... (LONG!)

I am at a bit of a loss here as far as what to do, so I thought I would throw out this issue I am having and see if anybody else has dealt with similar issues or had any ideas.

We started DS on cereal at about 5 mo, he was showing all the signs of readiness and was hugely interested in our foods.  It took him about 2 weeks to really accept the cereal, although I would still say he doesn't love it to this day, but he seemed to have grasped the basic concept of puree feeding. He could move the food from the front of his mouth to the back and seemed eager for more until he realized it was just cereal.   So we started some fruits and veggies at about 5.5 months old, making sure to only try one new food about every 3-4 days.  He definitely let us know which ones he liked and didn't like and by far prefers all fruits to anything else.  Since then I have been trying to do solid feedings twice a day, am and pm.  I usually do some type of cereal and a fruit in the am and a veggie and a fruit in the pm.

He has always struggled with anything that has any type of texture to it, such as homemade babyfood peas or green beans or oatmeal.  He would gag on it and occasionally vomit from it.  The past 2 weeks or so solid feeding has been a nightmare that ends in gagging everytime and vomiting at least every third feed or so.  I have experimented with different textures types, homemade food vs babyfood from a jar and nothing seems to make a difference now, initially he did better with food from a jar.  At first the gagging and/or vomiting was usually just with food that had even the slightest texture or thickness to it and veggies but he would always do well with say apples, pears, bananas or peaches. There for a while he would eat say 2 oz in the am and 3-4 oz in the pm of foods he liked and that were really thin and he seemed to really enjoy it.

The last several days he has started gagging after about 3-4 baby spoon bites on EVERYTHING, doesn't matter if it's something he loves or not, thin or thicker, I have tried it all.  The gagging will lead to vomiting unless I startle him by clapping loudly, saying his name loudly or blowing in his face, at which point he will usually stop gagging, swallow the food and open his mouth for more, at which point I will give him more and then he will gag again... rinse and repeat.  He will actually vomit about every third feeding or so now because I can stop him from gagging, at which point he freaks out and cries because let's face it... vomiting is scary! Lately I am lucky to get an 1 oz in him twice a day

I am not sure what to do, I feel like I have failed him by starting solids to early. I worry that solid feeding is becoming traumatic for him.  I am thinking about taking a vacation from solids for a few weeks and then starting over or perhaps continuing on the schedule we have now but stopping immediately when he shows any sign of gagging on it, so that would mean about 3 bites and then be done, since that's about all he seems to tolerate now.

I have read some info online that some babies never really get into puree feeding and would rather go straight to finger foods, but I can't imagine giving him any type of finger foods right now since his gag reflex seems so sensitive.

If you have read this far, thank you... any ideas???

Indifferent  Maybe your baby is not ready?  L is still struggling (different issue - very disinterested).  Maybe just be patient and don't push it?  He gets most of his dietary needs from bm/formula at this point anyway.  Just a guess.

This also seems like the obvious answer to me but then I just keep thinking about the couple weeks in there where he really seemed to enjoy it and would eat a couple oz twice a day.

  • Maybe ask your pedi?  All I know is that my mom (who took care of him for three days last week) claimed he was a fabulous eater.  Well, he sucks for me!  I just don't know.
  • I have a similar issue. DS gags and vomits on almost anything and everything we feed him. The only thing is he has always been that way. He's never had more than a few bites of anything at a time. So, I'm not sure why your LO liked it, then started having issues.

Our pedi was concerned at the 9 mo. checkup that DS wasn't eating anything. She told me to start giving him our food just in small bites or mushed up. I've been trying this and it really isn't helping. IDK what to do.

  • I am sorry you are dealing with this also!  It is so frustrating!

  • Oh, and Kari, the blank stare face was not for you.  I find certain things rude.

    Ok.

But I am a little confused... did I say something you found rude?  If so, I certainly didn't intend to do so.

  • I would simply back off a little and wait.

I know you said you are concerned because he was doing fine and then stopped liking it. But babies change from week to week. One week DD will sleep really well and then I pay for it the next week. :)

No harm in double checking with your pedi, but it's totally fine to back off on the solids. I think I was only doing one solid meal a day for the entire 6 month period.

Food is just for fun and learning at that point in my totally nonprofessional opinion. BM or formula is still his main source of nutrition. No reason to make it traumatic or force it if he's vomiting from it.

No, you did not say something rude.  I did not like the first response you were given.

  • Haha... I see.  The confusing part is, I was the first response to my own post... I commented on how long it was myself!  I didn't realize how lengthy it was until I hit "post."

    Don't worry, no hard feelings.

  • I read the new Dr Spock book and they recommend completely backing off for a bit if something like this happens. I would call pedi and ask them for advice but would just give BM/formula for a week or so. Does he go to daycare? Just curious if he did how it was going there for food.

We just started the 2nd meal after our last pedi appt because I was afraid to not be giving her enough formula and wanted their recommendations. I started solids at ~5 months.

  • Thanks for the info from Dr. Spock.

I think I will just drop them completely for at least a week or two and then try again slowly.

He is not at daycare, I am a SAHM.
