Symptoms of Pneunomia?

With all of these posts about pneunomia, I am paranoid.  Both of my girls have had a cough for the past week and a half.  I brought them to the doctor last Tuesday and they both had clear lungs and I was told to come back if it gets worse or a fever persists.  Keira did get a fever but it was gone in under 24 hours so I opted to stay away from the germ infested dr. office and wait it out.  Here we are a whole week later and both girls still have this cough but no other symptoms.  So tell me, what were your pneunomia symptoms?

  • Well, keep in mind pneumonia is a condition caused by something else, so you can't catch it persay...its the way your lungs respond to a virus or a bacteria. But for Marino, it was VERY clear he needed emergency medical care. He was having chest retractions - when he breathed, his whole chest caved in. You could actually see him breathing, underneath his clothes, across the room. He also would try to talk and a choking sound would come out. And he was miserable, crying, frowning, wouldn't smile, was lethargic - totally not himself. He had no fever and was eating ok, though. They would give him a breathing treatment and he would be happy for 10 minutes and then go right back to to the chest retractions. The only way to diagnose pneumonia is through a chest x-ray though.

If you see chest retractions, take them to the ER. But in our case, I could tell the second I went to pick him up from daycare that something was seriously wrong.

I hope your girls are better soon - 2 sick babies must be very tough!!

  • Like SBM said, Ryan was also having chest retractions when we dealt with this in Sept.  He was congested with a mild cough and a very runny nose when I put him to bed but then in the middle of the night he woke up and was having trouble breathing.  He had no fever but was completely inconsolable.  He was wheezing and his breathing was very rapid.  We KNEW there was something very wrong.  I think pneumonia is something that even though it comes on fast, you won't be able to dismiss it and will know you need to take your LO in.  Ryan was also diagnosed with a chest xray and was on breathing treatments.  I hope your girls get better soon.
