Are you avoiding places due to H1N1?

I usually don't worry about my kids being exposed to stuff, but I am really wondering if it is a bad idea to bring the kids to the Children's Museum, indoor play spaces, etc.  Especially if you have a DC under 6mths (none of us have the vaccine yet either) are you still going to these places? TIA

Re: Are you avoiding places due to H1N1?

  • For the most part yes.  We still go to preschool and PT....just dont go to indoor play places.  I'm even planning my errands around the times I wont have Michelle with me.  She's already getting colds from school & dont wanna expose her to other stuff if I dont have to.  She just has the seasonal flu vaccine...not sure if she ever gonna get the H1N1.

  • I didn't avoid anything.  Both my kids got H1N1.  It was not a big deal.

This. We're all healthy, I was not going to live my life in a bubble. We ended up getting it from my nephew, so avoiding public places isn't really going to help anything. It's everywhere. You could pick it up at the grocery, gas pump, etc.

  • nope. we'll prob get it at some point. we are religious about hand washing every single time we leave a public place (grocery store, indoor play place, playground)
  • I just bought a bunch of hand sanitizer. DS needs to get out, and if we get it, we get it.

Our pedi got the vaccine, but the appts filled up in about 10 seconds.

  • Not at all. My oldest even had it and other than normal precautions like handwashing, I didn't do anything different and my younger 2 didn't even get sick.

  • Sort of.  I've almost officially pulled DD (who is only 7 mo old) out of MDO...DS still goes because of the tremendous benefits he reaps from going.  I try not to take them with me to do most of the errands/grocery shopping, etc. if I can help it.  I avoid other people's sick kids like the plague...and keep mine home until they are WELL when they're sick.  But, we still have to live our lives.  I can't protect them 100%.  When they go to the pedi's office (checkups/flu shot) I'm sure they're exposed to so much junk.

  • I'm much more freaked out about h1n1 than I usually am about getting sick bc/ Matt is so young.  JD & I both got the vaccine, and I am *very* careful about handwashing etc.  I still do take them both to an art class and a music class every week, but I have not been going out on errands, to the mall, etc as much.  It's just as much due to the hassle of getting out in the limited newborn nap cycle, but the flu is always in the back of my mind.  FWIW, my pedi said the music together, gymboree type classes are usually not a big spot to get exposed to the flu bc/ ppl almost always tend to keep sick kids home from those, whereas they might still send them to DC or preschool bc/ they can't miss work.

  • No. We're not doing anything differently. H1N1 really scares me. I have asthma, so anything that can cause bad respiratory problems is a bit scary. There's just not much I can do. I work in hospitals and clinics every day. I'm trying my best to find the vaccine, but it's not highly available here.
