Best pump for a SAHM?

Is an electric pump that much better for a SAHM. What are your thoughts?

Re: Best pump for a SAHM?

  • you never know how your LO is going to take to BFing.  DD was a very fussy newborn and Bfing was not easy.  thank goodness i had an electric, dual pump!
  • YESSSSS!!!!!!  So much better.  I rented one from a lactation specialist.  It pumped both breasts at the same time in less time.  With my first LO, I manually pumped and that was so time consuming.  I eventually stopped pumping at just let her nurse as needed.

  • For me, YES, an electric pump is more efficient. I was able to pump 6oz. in 10 minutes one hour after my baby went to sleep at night.  I HATED my manual pump.

I have a Medela PIS - it has lasted through 3 kids and still going strong!

You can also get an Ameda Purely Yours - it's less expensive, but does the same job as the Medela.

  • Yes, you want an electric pump. Even though you'll be at home, you'll want pumping to take as little time as possible so you can get back to your LO (or get a nap while your LO is napping!).
  • YES!  I have the Medela PISA and can't imagine pumping with a manual pump.  The electric is so much quicker and more efficient.

  • never assume you won't have problems BFing.

I 'assumed' that since i was going to SAH- i wasn't going to need an electric pump. She never latched and i wound up pumping for 12 months- all the time.

    Never assume with children.

buy an electric and don't open it, save the receipt.

  • Sure, I think an electric pump is better than a manual for anyone.  But, not everyone takes to pumping.  When I had DD #1 I bought a really nice one for about $300.  I just never liked pumping.  I never got much supply and I resented the time I had to sit hooked up to it.  I gave it up pretty fast and never even bothered with #2 (although I did BF each for a year I just didnt' pump).
  • Yes, definately electric! I have both and never got anything from the manual. You can also rent them from a lot of hospitals for a very reasonable price. One of my girlfriends did this and when she was ready to she bought one.
  • Absolutely electric pump even for the SAHM. Your time is still valuable and pumping is already hard so you might as well save time and energy. I can't even imagine using anything but an electric pump.
  • I never pumped, but I love it when people mis-type SHAM for SAHM.  Makes me laugh every time.  Plays right into the stereotype of a stay at home mom.  LOL.
  • I never liked the electric pump, I found the Avent ISIS manual hand pump to be faster for me.

  • love love love the medela symphony pump. we rented it (insurance covered it because my son was in the NICU) and it makes a HUGE difference. and then if you bf you can feed and then pump.....and make a massive store.
