I bought material to make a fleece baby blanket this week to test if that would be a good idea for some Christmas presents. I was surprised to find I couldn't buy the fleece for less than $17. I was hoping to stay under $10 per blanket. Is this realistic? Or am I cheap?
I bought 1.5 yards no pill print fleece and 1.5 yards solid no pill fleece for the lining. Oh, and I bought it at Jo-Anns, where I experienced their famously warm customer service. *eye roll*.
Any ideas to keep costs under $10 per blanket?
Re: Is fleece really this $$??
You have to wait for coupons or sales really. It is expensive. Even if you find a cheaper place somewhere else you'd have to pay shipping which is astronomical most of the time.
They wouldn't let me use the coupon b/c it was already "on sale."
Boo.
Yeah that sucks. How much did you get it for a yard then? I'd price and see what it would cost if you waited for a coupon when it wasn't on sale and see if it's a better price. They'll also be have a bunch of sales between now and xmas.
So, you bought three yards for $17? $5.50-ish a yard is very reasonable.
If you want to cut costs, I suggest not making the blankets double-layer. Rather, just bind the edges with some satin binding or roll the edge of the blanket to hem it.
Or, if you don't have a machine you could still do the no sew blanket idea by cutting it the same way you would if you were doing a double layer one and either leave it fringed like that or just tie knots in the one layer.
That said, one of DD's favorite blankets (and mine, surprisingly) is fleece with a satin edge binding. Soft, snuggly, and nice.
I was wondering if I could do single-layer. Of course the project instructions they show at the store has them double-layer, but I was wondering if that was a ploy to sell more fleece.
Yeah, Glad, I got 3 yds for $17. I guess I just don't know what prices are for fabric b/c I'm kind of new to crafting in general.
They did have "make your own fleece throw packages" with 2 pieces of fleece, both 2 3/4 yds. It was $29.99, which I thought was high for a blanket you still have to make.
