Smoking and babies :(

What would you do if someone in your apartment building was smoking and your hallway smelled like smoke every night? Our building is supposed to be smoke-free, and DH and I have both called the landlord, but these people keep smoking inside and I don't know what to do.

I'm really worried about my baby. . .

Is there some kind of magic, EF solution that takes toxins out of the air?

I would be LIVID!! I would call the landlord one more time and then send a letter mentioning that you will call the police.   Then call the police!  That is illegal!

I second the previous post.  I don't know how effective calling the police would be but being a very squeaky wheel to the landlord is likely to get some action.  If they can figure out who it is (perhaps you can do a slow walk by each apartment door) they will know who to put on notice.  I does devalue the landlords property. 

 

In the meantime you can buy an air cleaner.

I wouldn't call the police, they have much more important things to deal with, however, I would continue to call the landlord (repeatedly if necessary) and either demand that he provide you with an apartment in another building away from the smoker, breaks your current lease without penalty or does something about the smokers.  If it's in your lease that it is a smoke-free environment then he has a responsibility to provide that.  Sorry you're dealing with this.  I, too, HATE smokers.

I too would keep complaining to your landlord, especially if you moved into a building being told it was smoke free.  I don't understand why someone who smokes would move into a non-smoking building, but that's not the point now (I'm just amazed at their insensitivity to others).  In the meantime I would look into an air purifier.  I believe, but I'm not certain, that some claim to help with second-hand smoke.

An air purifier should get most of the yuck out of the air.  I use mine for white noise as well.  Just make sure to get one that is the appropriate size for your space to ensure you are getting most of the stuff out of the air.

I agree, get an air purifier and then call the building management. It sounds ilke a big enough building that you'd have one and not all have the same landlord. If the person smoking has a different landlord yours might not be able to do much more than complain to building management anyway, so I'd just go right to the source if I were you. And I'd probably put up notices in the common areas saying "we have a newborn and would appreciate people follow the rules and not smoke inside the building. if we continue to smell it we will be contacting building management."

Call the landlord again.  It's illegal to smoke in any building here so I guess a call to the police would be fine if the landlord isn't doing anything about it.  Document when you called the landlord too.
