Stomach-sleeping boys....Night time CD???

We are having a hard time with this night CD as he's getting bigger and still chooses to sleep on his stomach. The front of the diaper will be soaked in the morning while the rear is almost bone dry.

We currently use a GM, snap the insert into the front of it (comes out the top about 1/2 inch) and fold both layers forward, so all 4 layers of the insert are in the front of the diaper. We then use a hemp insert (Foo Foo or Hemp Babies) around the front of the diaper on the outside, either tri- or quad- folded for 3-4 extra absorbency layers. Then we top it all off with a wool soaker.

Sometimes this is successful and other times he wakes up soaking wet. The big problem we're having with it is that we have to put so many layers in the front that it almost doesn't seem like a diaper anymore. It's sooooo bulky in the front we can barely get the cover on it. I'm convinced that this diaper would be sufficient if he were a back sleeper. It's just that gravity makes it all settle in the front of the diaper/inserts.

Does anyone have a 100% effective solution for a front-sleeping boy?

I thought about trying to get a custom hemp front insert for the outside of the diaper so that it could be more contoured. While having the same number of layers, maybe it would fit better under the cover if it was shaped, rather than a folded rectangle. I was trying to type it up to contact AFFF on Etsy, but Etsy fritzed and deleted my info before I sent it....grrr. Not even sure if she could make one absorbent enough that would fit any better.

ugh...sorry this turned out so long.

  • That's a LOT of diaper!  We only use a goodmama on DS and he's a stomach sleeper.  I'm figuring out that he'[s not a super heavy wetter.  Would he wake up if you change him into the heavy duty diaper right before you go to bed?

  • LOL...I know!!! hmmm...I would say most definitely it would wake him. He sleeps solid from 7-5 (or 6) so I'd be afraid of messing that up. I have found that B4s have a little bit more to offer in the front, especially when we fold all the layers forward. We've only had the B4 for a few weeks and I haven't paid enough attention to whether it's ever been one of the "leaky" nights or not. I *think* he has always woken up with dry clothes when he wears the B4. I guess I could invest in a few more of those.....ugh. I have 6-7 GMs, though and while I could use them during daytime some, I hate to try to replace that many "night time" diapers.

ETA: lol....and speaking of it being a lot of diaper: I have NO idea how he's able to roll around with all that on!! Poor thing can't sit with it on. We've tried...haha. He's like Humpty Dumpty....or a Weeble (except he does fall down).

  • We use Bum Genius AIOs with two inserts (not sure of the material, but you could probably look online). I have recently added a third insert folding it to be only in the front so that he stays dry for 6 hours, but we have started changing him after 6 hours to prevent him waking up. He is a heavy wetter...those inserts are dripping by morning, but the AIO is really good at holding in the liquid so that it is only slightly damp on the outside. I do not think there is a CD that will keep a heavy wetter dry for 12 hours.

You could just put a dry pad under him so that the moisture is wicking away from his skin. We do this so that it is easy to swap out the pad rather than trying to change the whole bed. They have wool or help pads at most baby stores. I even found them at a local "one stop shop"!

We are just starting to EC during the day, so that is helping because he is now dry through his 2-3 hour naps. I am going to tackle his nights in another month and hope to have him pee in the potty mid-way through the night until he can hold it for the whole night...but that is a  whole other story.

  • We've never had issues with leaking at night and J is a belly-sleeper.  We use a BG with a big hemp insert on the bottom, the BG big MF insert in the middle, and a smaller hemp insert on top.  He is in the diaper for 12-13 hours and it works so far!
  • We have a VERY heavy wetter and we have had excellent results with a drybees fleece outer stuffed with a MF insert and 2 hemp. It's huge, but it's the only thing that keeps him dry for 12-13 hours.
  • My 1 yr old DS has always slept on his belly and since he was 2 months old sleeps in Motherease Sandy's diaper with a stay dry liner and we also add a hemp doubler from GMD.  Althought the outer part of the diaper is wet he's completely dry due to the stay dry liner.  He sleeps 12 hours at night and his a very heavy wetter at night (which is why we had to add the doubler).
  • we have had good results from Blueberry pocket snapping diapers. They look a little bulky on him, but work at least 90% of the time. I use the hemp/mf insert they come with, along with another hemp insert I made from 3 layers of hemp fleece. I fold that one so that most of it is up front. The inserts are sopping wet, but he feels dry even after 11 hours.

Before we scored our blueberries, we had decent luck for a long time with a BG 3.0 pocket stuffed with 2 mf and 1 hemp insert.

  • DS is a tummy sleeper as well and has been for months.  We use a double-stuffed BG and it holds him 99% of the time - we had a little wetness yesterday morning but that's because he slept an hour later than normal.  Anyway, I'm wondering if you're getting the diaper so thick in front that it is causing gaping and the pee is leaking out that way rather than because it's not absorbent enough.  Even though DS is on his tummy all night the back of his inserts are still soaked.

  • It seems sort of weird to me that the pee doesn't soak into that back part of the insert/diaper.  Does the fit seem okay, in the leg holes and front?

If I put my DS in a GM during the day, he has soaked it in 2 hours.

This is what we have been using at night, a BG with a hemp insert in back, a pre-fold in the middle, and a microfiber insert on top, all stuffed into the pocket - works most of the time, but everynow and then there is a leak.  Good luck!
