Is there a way to nurse a baby with teeth so it doesn't hurt?

DS's top teeth are in and nursing has become downright painful.  I don't know how to position him differently to make it more comfortable.

What did you do when DC's teeth came in?  I didn't have this problem with DS1 -- he nursed until he was 12.5 months, but didn't have his top teeth yet.

  • Did you try nursing while laying down?

  • It took a little while for DD to get used to nursing with teeth.  After a week or two it didn't hurt as much.
  • He will get used to it and so will you and it won't hurt anymore. It is like how BFing hurts when you first start and then it doesn't hurt after a couple of weeks. If he bites you, break his latch and don't put him back on. But if he is just getting used to having the teeth in his mouth, he just needs to learn to nurse with them. It isn't bad for long.
  • Maybe try using a nipple shield for awhile?

ditto ditto ditto both of mine had 10+ teeth by 12mos/weaning, they got used to it pretty fast. ?

I also would have a teething ring handy for biting (which only happened when teething) - I'd slip a finger in there fast to avoid the clamp-down, pull the kid off, say no biting, offer the teether, wait a minute, start again, repeat when needed. ?They got the clue that you chew the toy, not me.
