Cannot decide whether to get the H1N1 vax

I have a 3 yo in preschool and an almost 5 mo old.  MH teaches at a university, and I'm a SAHM.  I need to decide soon b/c they are offering shots here until FR.  I just can't decide one way or another.

Anyone in a similar situation and are you going to get it or not?

 Thanks!!

  • Do you or your DCs usually get a flu shot?

  • I was on the fence but decided that we will get them.  I teach and dd attends preschool.  It is already spreading through my school quite quickly (we dont' have any vaccine available).  A 12 year old nearby died Monday.  She became sick on Friday and was dead on Monday.  No pre-existing conditions and was an athlete.  I will def. chance it with getting the vaccine.
  • Thanks for posting this. I'm sitting here right now trying to research it all....yet again. I was thinking no, but now I really don't know what to do.

I have never gotten a flu shot (and also never gotten the flu).  MH has gotten the shot for the last two years.  DS got one of the two shots last year ... I decided not to get him the second dose b/c he got a 102 fever from the shot and he wasn't in preschool anyway.  Don't know if I'll get him the seasonal flu shot this year or not.

  • BTW, your kids are so cute!

  • Well, I am definitely getting DS the shot (if I can get it). We get him the flu shot every year and the H1N1 is exactly the same as the seasonal flu shot - made in the same way, same timeline, etc. - as the seasonal flu shot. I don't want to mess with the flu - regular or H1N1. The flu is no fun.

  • We're in your same situation.  DD 1 is in preschool and they had 4 cases in her class just this week.  I've kept her out for 2 days.  On the fence about sending her tomorrow.  We're not doing the vaccine.  Since I SAH and the school is very prompt on emailing parents on how many cases they are dealing with on a daily basis, we are trying to avoid it. (I know, impossible to totally do, but I'm trying.)

Thanks!  You need to post a pic of yours sometime.  : )

  • Another question:  Isn't the mist a live virus?  I know it is on the seasonal flu shot, so I'm assuming it's the same for the H1N1.  Because I have a baby at home isn't this risky?  Would DS just be allowed the shot?

  • dd's asthma prevents her from the mist but her pedi isn't doing the mist for any kids because he isn't comfortable with the live virus thing.  He is doing the injections when they become available.

My pedi also said he wasn't comfortable with the live virus (mist) at all. Seasonal flu yes. H1N1 no. Unfortunately, they only had the mist right.

Your children are beautiful!!!  I can't believe your DD has so much hair!!  My LO is still bald, and will probably be until she's two, lol.

  • I would absolutely get the H1N1 vax for my toddler (and myself)- I just wish my freakin' state had some of it.

I'm guessing your 5mo can't get the vax- so if it were me I'd feel better getting the rest of the family vaccinated.

  • DH works in a hospital, I stay home, DD1 goes to preschool 4 days a week.  Both girls got regular flu shots and both got the first dose of H1N1.  DD1 got the mist, DD2 the shot.

  • IF we can get it, we certainly will. My little guy is high risk, but we don't seem to have any of the vaccine around here. Frustrating...
