Christmas stocking holder suggestions?

Any ideas for a 'safe' Christmas stocking holder on my mantle?  The cute ones are somewhat deadly weapons if pulled down my a 2yo or 8mo.  I can't bear to imagine those heavy things falling down on my LO's.  What do you use?

Re: Christmas stocking holder suggestions?

  • When I was a kid we just used pushpins to hold up the stockings.  The mantle had a lot of decorative moulding so we could stick the pins in an inconspicuous spot where you wouldn't notice the holes later.  Of course when the stockings were filled, they were too heavy to hang up so Santa left them laying on the hearth.

  • We have small nails hammered into the molding around the mantle. We have very small stockings that don't hold much, but nails hold them up and they look cute. Larger stocking gifts are just left on a nearby table, wrapped in different paper (usually newspaper comics) to distinguish them.

  • DH screwed hooks into the underside of our mantle last year (mostly because our previous "weapons" would have blocked the tv we mounted up there). ?They held the stockings great - even when they were full and they can be unscrewed if we wanted to but I didn't because I didn't want the holes to get too loose plus I use them to hang other stuff throughout the year- garland, decorations, etc.

My MIL also used hooks under the mantle when DH and SIL were young. Worked great and looked very nice as well.
