How to explain to a 2YO about an animal dying?

My DD and DS go to my IL's twice a week.  For the last few months they have been raising cows that they planned on butchering.  Well the time has finally come and one of the cows are going to be slaughtered in the next few weeks. I am a total animal lover and have no idea how to explain why one of the cows is going to be missing?

    I don't know.  Maddie asks about the cat we "lost" all the time and it happened right around when Owen was born.

    She obviously doesn't need to know the details. I think I would just tell her it went to live somewhere else?

    I need to know this too! DS loves, loves, loves dogs. He always tells me his best friends are Jax (our dog) and Maggie (IL's dog) Maggie just got put to sleep and I don't know what to say. We haven't said anything yet because we haven't gone to IL's house since it happened, but we will soon. He loves that dog. And now I hijacked your post. But I don't think you can really explain this to a 2 year old, can you? It makes me sad :-( I will be interested to see if anyone has advice since I don't!

    I asked this morning because we last our cat and joseysbride said she had told her dd that their dog went to see his mom and dad.
