How to tell to my 2 year old that her cat has passed?

Last night our cat Sassy got out we looked until midnight for her and could not find her.  I left our window open so if she cried at the back door and nothing.  DH looked before he left for work and did not find her.  I looked this morning and found her next door and she was gone.  Darlene keeps walking around the house looking for her and asking me where she went.  I told her sassy died and she went to heaven but she is not understanding.  She is only 2 (she will be 3 in dec) so I really just think she is to young to understand that the cat is not comming back.  Should we just not say anything when she asks for her.  My sister thinks we need to get a new cat to make dd forget about her but I dont think our other animals will like that idea, and dh really does not want to replace her right now.

any ideas.

  • We had to put our dog down last winter, and had the same problem with our dd.  She didn't get it.  Finally, after about three days, I told her that his mommy and daddy missed him so he went to go live with them.  She was like, "oh, okay."  She never asks where he is anymore.  In fact, she still tells people that Griffin went to see his mommy and daddy, and that was almost a year ago.  LOL!  Whatever works, I guess.

Sorry to hear about your cat.
