Abortion protesters. Yea, beat the dead horse w/ me.

I drive by Planned Parenthood on my way to work, about 1x a week. There are usually protesters. This morning they were in a circle praying.

First, I am honestly so thankful we live in a country that you can protest on a street corner 365 days a year and not get arrested or killed for your beliefs.

But second, why does anyone care what I do with my body? I know, it was like an epiphany. Unless you are the father, what impact does me aborting my child have on your life? You aren't raising the child.

It must be the PG brain talking today, because I'm all doe eyed today and honestly do not get why anyone else cares enough about my body to stand on a street corner everyday.

  • Seriously, they should put as much effort into protecting the children that are here and get abused on a daily basis. That would probably make a ton more difference in this world.

  • I see that too, it actually makes me mad. I wish they wouldn't stand out there and do that. It's not their body/life, so it shouldn't be their decision.
  • A clinic that performs abortions is 2 blocks from my office at my University, and there are busloads of screaming protesters every other Thursday.  It is insane.  The clinic (of course) provides a wide range of women's health services, so most of the patients who are harassed are not seeking abortions (not that anyone should be harassed).  It sucks, to put it baldly.
  • Everytime I pass them I think "don't you have anything better to do?". I'm all for freedom of speech too, I just think there are better ways to get their message across.

    that is a GREAT idea!

Seriously.  What a great thought!  I'm also all about free speech, but there are so many more things that they could be doing to protect children.

    ditto.

now I'm pro freedom of speech and go ahead and protest peacefully... don't get aggressive or touch anyone, keep your distance whatever... one thing I CANNOT STAND is this one group that protests on a major blvd here and twice I've seen them holding up a huge picture of an aborted fetus in the middle of the day... one day dd recognized the baby's hand and asked me about the baby.  rrrrrr.  I mean, please.. that is not necessary. think about the children who will see that.  come on!

Amen. Can you imagine the impact that much passion & manpower would have for children that are here and need help!

  • That's the thing, they don't think.

Again, there are so many kids in need of protection, they should get their asses on that.

    All of this.

It's one of those issues where your own personal feelings should not dictate what the general public has a right to do.

Am I pro-choice?  Hell yes.  Does that mean I agree with abortion?  No, I don't agree with it at all.  I hate the thought of it, BUT guess what, I'm not the one having to make that decision.  Therefore, I will support another woman's right to make that choice.

I'm also one of those whack-a-doos that thinks that late term (or partial birth for the fear mongerers out there) abortions should be legal.  Do some research, learn more about it, it's not what most people (read radical extremists) think it is.

  • They think they are protecting innocent lives which is why they care what other people do with their body... I disagree, and agree w/ xbrooklyn on caring for kids who are here.

The abortion debate is so frustrating to me.  I get what the people who are against it think, I really do, because for the most part, I feel the same way based on when I think life begins.  But for the life of me, I cannot understand why they want to force their religious beliefs on the rest of the country.  It's not a theocracy.

  • What gets me so upset with these people is that so often they are the same people who will shrug and say, "tough luck" when it comes to the government programs that some of the "innocent lives" they think they are saving will inevitably need.  So, force a woman to have a baby that she doesn't want and knows she can't take care of, then be too greedy and elitist to help.  Makes my blood BOIL.
  • I get it. They believe that life begins at conception and therefore thousands of inncocent lives are being murdered. I don't believe that, so I am pro-choice. If I did agree with that concept you bet your butt I would be protesting outside clinics, just like I have been involved in anti-death penalty protests, pro gay marriage rallies, etc. As long as they are peaceful, who cares? I am actually on the waitlist to be an escort volunteer at our Planned Parenthood (the escorts lead the women past the protesters), but I understand why those protestors are there.

  • But Devon, you could believe that life begins at conception and still be pro-choice.
  • They're not praying for body of the mother - they're praying for the baby's body.  Abortion protesters believe that life begins at conception, and that it's murder to abort a pregnancy that's already in development.  The standing on the street corner has 0% to do with the mother and 100% to do with the fetus she's carrying inside her.

I'm on the fence about abortion.  I can see both sides of the issue and I'm thankful that I've never been in the shoes of someone who has been faced with a choice like that.  So I can't really say yay or nay, you know?  But I do find your statement saying "Unless you are the father, what impact does me aborting my child have on your life?" interesting.  There are MANY choices other parents make that don't directly affect my kids, but that I believe in enough to try to put a stop to - things like child abuse and stuff.

  • They care because it's not just your body--it's the body of the child that is in your uterus too.  If you abuse your child...really it's just you & "yours" but still it's never justifiable--so why is the worst form of child abuse OK to stand by & let happen (shouldn't be protested against).  It is another human being, it just is, I personally have no doubt about it.  There was a time when the masses believed that black people, mentally & physically handicapped & jews were not "worthy" of life/liberty either.  There was a question of their "humanity" as well...I am sure lots of people thought the holocaust was wrong or slavery was wrong on some level but did NOTHING &/or considered it none of their business.  Thank God not everyone felt apathetic on those issues.  I am glad some people have the will & time to stand up for something they do consider murder...some people believe that apathy toward a wrong is just as wrong as participating in it.  And I can pretty much guarantee you that those people who are out protesting ALSO give their time/resources to other pro-active causes & more times than not do adopt, etc.

LOL.  I don't buy this at all - nutty religious zealots usually practice the furthest thing from "family values" in their own lives.
