Anyone's child have asthma?

My 4 yo DS has has allergies and "asthma".  However, he uses his inhaler maybe once every 3-4 months for slight wheezing.  He gets wheezy when he is around his allergens but that's because he's having an allergic reation to them.  And, when he gets sick with a bad cold we do the nebulizer to loosen it up and then his wheezing is gone.

How does this compare to your child's asthma?

Re: Anyone's child have asthma?

  • My 4 year old has asthma.  His is pretty controlled unless he is sick.  He doesn't actually have an inhaler, our pediatrician didn't think he was old enough for one.  So we have a nebulizer, he's had it since he was 1.  Typically we only need to use it when he's sick.  If he has a cold we use the pulmicort and albuteral twice a day, and then just albuteral as needed.  He has ended up in the ER a few times with pneumonia but we find as long as we start the nebulizer as soon as he shows any cold/coughing signs he does better.

My son doesn't appear to have allergens that cause the asthma symptoms.

  • DDs is usually fine unless she's sick or when they seasons change. In the spring and fall we do nightly Pulmicort treatments in her nebulizer. Albuterol is only has needed (she's needed it a few times this week though). She was tested for allergies and only has very mild outdoor allergies, but she's been having a hard time this fall - maybe the cold, crisp air?

When she's sick, she has bad attacks. We ended up in the ER (once by ambulance) 4-5 times last winter when she had a cold. Not fun. She seemed to do better once we started doing the Pulmicort as a preventative medication though.
