health ins. ? - is pregnancy a "pre-existing condition"

It looks like I'm going back to work before the end of the year (yay!) and should get their group health insurance benefits after about six month -- so probably May or June. Our crappy individual plan covers prenatal care but not labor and delivery. If I were to be pregnant when the new insurance started, would my labor/delivery be covered? Anyone know? Thanks!

  • I believe that as long as you have not lapsed on your insurance, you can pick up your employers insurance and be covered.  That is what happened when I was preganat.  I paid COBRA from my previous employer (not knowing that I could have picked up my current employers insurance with coverage) and then switched to my current employers insurance the day DS was born.

  • Every place I have ever worked waives pre existing conditions, so everything is covered from the start.  There are so many different plans around there that you would really need to look at the details of your own plan.

  • No, it is not a pre-existing condition. Just make sure you keep your current individual plan until then.

  • I have heard of cases where it is, so I would check.
  • It might vary by company or state...but I know in Colorado it is not (I believe it's the law)...I switched insurance twice pregnant here.

  • Pregnancy is considered pre-existing when going from a private/individual plan to a group plan.

Pregnancy cannot be considered pre-existing when going from a group plan to a group plan, however.

  • When going from a group plan to an individual plan it is considered pre-existing. This is why we can't get any different insurance than the Cobra that we currently have (I was laid off in April) until after I have the baby. It sucks, but I have called at least 20 different insurance companies (including the BCBS that I have now) and they all told me that we would not be approved because of my pregnancy.
