Anyone with exclusively breastfed babies with constipation?

DS is exclusively BF and about 10 days ago has suddenly only been pooping about every 3-4 days.  Any tips on what I should do?

  • As long as he is still gaining wieght that is totally normal.

  • oOr doc said do nothing as long as they are pooping at least once every 7 days.  Around 3 months DD went from pooping every day to pooping once a week.  Her bowel habits change every few months:)

  • Yup.  Totally normal.  As long as his stools aren't hard pebbles, he's not constipated.  My understanding is that BM is so much gentler on their stomachs it makes it hard for it to stimulate the bowels (sorry TMI).  Still, if it's not pooping rocks, he's not constipated.  Don't worry about it.
  • Normal.  Not constipation.  My cousin, a ped, says she has seen patients go as long as a month.  My DS can easily go 4 or 5 days and he eats some solids.
  • I agree that it is normal for a BF bed to only poop every 3-4 days or longer.  But if you have started solids he might be constipated.  As soon as we started solids with DD, she was constipated and it didn't end until a few months ago.  If he is crying and uncomfortable call your pediatrician.  If he is only going every 3-4 days but is comfortable and what comes out isn't hard or clay like, he's okay.
