Can you do Direct Deposit into someone else's account?

For example. Right now my H and I bank at the same bank. I pay all of the bills so he just transfers the money into my account. I want to change banks but he doesn't. Can he have his Direct Deposit at work set up so that X amount of dollars goes into my account and X into his? Or would it have to be a joint account with both of our names on it?

  • You should be able to do that.  I have 2 accounts at 2 different banks and there isn't any problem.  He may just have to sign something with his HR department stating he is okay with it.

  • I am almost positive that you will both need to be on the account for that to happen.  Is there a reason you are wanting to switch?  I was just thinking you could open your new one and leave your old one so he can still transfer the money.  Maybe just pay bills out of the old one and use your new one for everything else?

  • Yep, sure can.  I used to do that before we got married.  We still bank at different banks.
  • Yes, you can. This is how BIL pays his child support.

  • You can do it through direct deposit I think, but not transferring.  We have been trying to work that out to.
