PT and public toilets?

We've been "officially" potty training since Monday and the boys have been doing really well.  They have had maybe 1 or 2 accidents and that's it.  At home, I have them in regular underwear and for naps, sleep and going out I have them in pull ups.  But, when we're out and they have the pull ups on they just pee in the pull ups -it's like they know that it's like a diaper and it's ok to go to the bathroom in.  So, I'm guessing that I should put them in regular underwear while out, but I'm a little scared of them having an accident and I don't know if it's too soon to have them use a public toilet, at home we use pottys, they haven't used the regular toilet yet.  Help?

Re: PT and public toilets?

  • Can you keep a potty in the car? I did this when I was PT'g DD. Also pack extra clothes for each of them and maybe put a towel on the carseat for a bit. I think that even if they do have an accident, they will find they don't like it.

  • Ditto pp.  We had a potty seat in the trunk and I pulled it out at every stop before and after.  It took all of 1 minute for him to go so it wasn't inconvenient at all and it saved us from having to use the public restrooms until he could stand up and pee.

And the extra clothes and towel in the carseat is a good idea too!

  • I think I'd try at least a toilet ring on the potty at home first. That's what DD started on and she did ok using a public toilet from the beginning. I set her on it, squated in front of her, held her at the small of her back and she hung onto my neck... eventually she got more comfortable and stopped holding on to me. Of course, she was also fascinated with the big flush of the public toilet before she even started PTing, so she was pretty thrilled to use it and not scared of it like some kids are.

Also, I have a little potty in my car, so she often uses that as soon as we arrive somewhere or before we leave if the bathrooms are too far away or just too nasty. Comes in handy for stopping on the side of the road to pee too.

  • One piece of advice that no one tells you.

If you go in the public potty and you need to pull up pants, then turn the child to the side so you don't get splashed with toilet water during the power flush and you both stay dry and not have poo water in your face.

Yes, it happened to me. I thought I was going to throw up.

  • My philosphy about the public toilets was I would neve know what would happen until I tried. I just made sure to bring a couple extra outfits and undies.
  • I have one of those foldable plastic toilet rings that I put in my diaper bag.  DD1 doesn't need it anymore, but I still have it, just in case.  I never did the potty seat in my car.  She would never try, so after two or three trips pakcing that thing, I stopped.
  • extra clothes in the car, including a clean cloth to wipe up pee.

we just use the public potty. I sit his butt on the way back. other kids sort of dip their tush towards the front. they figure it out.

yea, public bathrooms suck but I don't have time or patience to haul a potty around with me. I do take a MASSIVE wad of toilet paper (often dampened from the public sink) to wipe a toilet if I have to do it. But usually they are relatively 'clean'
