Knitters/crocheters, etc.

Did you take lessons or are you self-taught?

I suck.  I am so bad at looking at written or picture instructions--I just don't learn well that way.  I have been trying to learn how to crochet for awhile now (not a ton of effort, but...) and I cannot do anything but make one long chain.  LOL

I am thinking of taking a lesson or two, just to get the hang of the basics.  I think I will learn better if someone actually shows me.  Is it absolutely pathetic to have to take a lesson? I can't decide if that's reasonable or if my inability to figure it out on my own should clue me in that it's just not for me.  gah!

Re: Knitters/crocheters, etc.

  • Completely self taught, but I watched the videos on www.knittinghelp.com over and over and over again.  I was so frustrated in the beginning, but I am so thankful that I stuck with it.  I only wish I had picked it up earlier.  (It's been a year this weekend since I first picked up needles.)

There are also tons of books out there to help.

  • Everyone learns differently! I taught myself, but live lessons might be just what you need. Not pathetic at all!

  • Combo of self-taught and being around relatives who do it.

I bought books & taught myself, but my mom lives close by, she helps if I need it. ?Sometimes things are easier if you have someone who can sit down and actually show you and watch you work to see if you've got it down or not.

  • I wouldn't say I took a 'lesson,' but I learned from the ladies at the yarn store in my town.  It took all of like 10 mins to show me what to do and I sat there for a while and just knit (knitted?)  Of course, it took many projects and just practicing to feel really comfortable. If you have a store near you, I would bet that if you buy your supplies from them, they'll be more than happy to teach you and help you.  That's generally how it works at yarn stores.  I also have tons of reference books.  Sometimes I use the internet, but not often.

I just picked my needles back up this week after a 7 mth hiatus.  Now I have literally 6 projects that I'm working on!

    Good luck and have fun!

  • My ex-MIL taught me years ago, and I just picked it up again. I totally needed a refresher, and watched the videos on YouTube.

Not pathetic at all-- just call your local yarn store and see what they offer.
