What IUD do you use?

Hey ladies. Just wondering what IUD you use and if you like it. I'm going to go back on BC after my 6 week check-up, but don't really think I want to do a pill. I don't know much about IUD's, so thought I'd start here and get some input from you all. Thank you!

  • I had Mirena...LOVED it. Take ibprof before you go in, it hurt (me) a little, but totally worth it. I spotted/light period for a week, the the foolowing month had a light period-like 3-4 days, then nothing again. I had it put in Nov 07, removed May 09. Currently TTC.

  • Mirena.  I talked with my doc shortly after delivery (still in hospital) and had it inserted at my 6 week pp check up.  It took about an extra 2 minutes (she was doing a pap as well).  I love it now, but I did bleed pretty heavily for 2 solid weeks (sucked) and I have had 3 periods since.

Overall though, I love it.  I don't have to think about birth control and have had no issues.

Oh, the insertion was less 'invasive' than the pap.  No big deal AT ALL.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • I have the Paraguard, non-hormonal.

Next time I think I'll get the Mirena (as long as there are no issues with bf'ing).

I have a period every 3 weeks lately and it sucks.  I thought it would be great b/c there are no hormones but I'm still a mess a week before my period.

I love not having to think about it at all.  The only down side to mine was that I had to pay for everything out of pocket b/c my insurance does not cover birth control of any sort.  It was about $800 when it was all said and done.

Insertion hurt a little but not more than a pap.

    Mommy to three adorable boys!
  • I'm on my second Mirena. I had my first one removed to have ds and then got another as soon as I could after having him. With my first, I had two days of spotting and then no periods for over 3 years. With my one after ds, I had 6 weeks of spotting, spotting-like periods for 5 months after insertion and then finally I stopped getting my periods again completely. It's LOVELY and so liberating not to have to worry about having a period each month. The only negative, I've noticed I have headaches for 2-3 days before when I would normally have a period.

  • I have paraguard.  It last for 10 years, so 2X as long as Minera.  It is harmone free.  I have had no problems.
  • I have the Mirena and I am not a fan, but I haven't gotten around to scheduling my removal yet because I am not sure what to do about an alternative BC.

I bled for 3 months after it was placed (Aug. '08) and after that, got a 2 week long period with 2 weeks of no bleeding in between. It's made my face break out, my hair fall out, and my sex drive go to crap.

  • Mirena.  I like it just fine....as far as hormonal bc goes.  Insertion wasn't bad at all...it wasn't completely pleasant either but more of a pinch with some cramping.  My OB only inserts them while you're on your period...so I was cramping anyway.  I spotted for weeks following insertion.  Then, I haven't had a period to speak of until just this past week.  It's great to not have to take a pill every day or deal with the patch or nuvaring.  I hated all of the aforementioned forms of bc!

  • Paragard here...  I had pree twice.  my ob/gyn suggested BC without hormones.... so paragard it was.  the first few periods were heavier , crampier... but that faded.  nothing a little ibuprofen couldn't help.  I am as regular as I was before having babies.... every 4 wks like clockwork.  4-5 days in length... with 2-3 heavier days. can be left in place for 10 years.  no complaints.
