Breathing treatment pros... ?

When should I worry that the breathing treatments are not enough for Maren?  She's been on the for 2 days now and she is still breathing really raspy.  You can feel her whole back and chest vibrate when she breathes.  She has never had a fever, sleeping normal, eating normal, color is good, but breathing is bad.  She tested negative for RSV on Wed.  Should I put a call back into the doc or do you think it is all just loosening up, causing the rattled breathing?  IDK?

Re: Breathing treatment pros... ?

  • I would call & talk to a nurse just to be safe.  USUALLY if she's phlegmy and coughing things up it's good and loosening up.

We had to nebulize Bryan for days before it really seemed to make much of a difference.

  • I'd probably err on the side of caution and put a call in to the nurse/pedi.  We've only had to give neb treatments to DS once in his life as a baby and I think I recall it taking several days.  But still, I'd call.  They might want you to bring her in to listen to her lungs.  GL!  I hope she gets well soon!

  • How many times a day are you administering it? We typically give P a treatment every four hours, around the clock. For something like bronchitis, it will take a few days.

Did the prescribe anything other than the neb? When P had bronchitis, she was also giving a steriod.

I would probably call and just let them know that she's still wheezing and see what they think. They may tell you to keep doing what you're doing or they may want to see her.

Sorry you're having to deal with this. Breathing issues suck!

  • From what I remember with B, it sounded worse before it sounded better. I remember it took close to a week (4 days maybe) for me to finally start seeing a change.

  • What is she on and how often are you doing them?  Is she still wheezing and coughing or just raspy?  b/c if it's loosening up, then it might sound raspy/loose.  When it wasn't working for my DS2, he continued to have a tight sounding cough and was still wheezing, despite the tx.  Call your pedi and ask to be sure!

  • We had to give DD breathing treatments everyday for nearly a year. She had underlying problems though. I think the rattling could just be mucus, or maybe bronchial irritation.
