Swine flu exposure....questions...

On Sunday my 2 boys and I had a playdate wtih my DH's cousin's 5 yr old son.  The kids played very closely together.  Yesterday the 5 yr old was sent home from school with a fever.  Today they went to the doctor and he tested positive for swine flu.

My kids have no symptoms and seem fine.  Are they at risk since on Sunday the child was fine (no fever or symptoms)?  If so, without being sick can they pass the swine flue to someone else?  We have a party to go to on Saturday where there will be younger kids in attendance and I don't want to risk getting them sick.

Thanks!
Heather

Re: Swine flu exposure....questions...

  • Yes, we got exposed when my nephew had no symptoms, and we all got it eventually. I would skip the party, but without symptoms, I would not limit myself to my house. Everything I'm reading is saying that it is so widespread, you should stay home with symptoms, and at least 24 hours after the symptoms have disappeared, but not to coop yourself up if there is a lack of symptoms.

  • With most things you are contageous before you show any symptoms, once you've had symptoms for a couple of days usually you aren't contageous anymore.

So you guys have already been exposed.

  • you are contageious from 1 day before symptoms until after the fever has broken.

The incubation period is 5-7 days.

Your nephew would not have been contagious on Sunday if he just had symptoms yesterday.  However HE would have been exposed last weekend.

  • Unfortunatley, you are not going to know if you or they have it for up to 7 days. Gargle and drink lots of warm fluids a few times a day.
