Trying to Get Pregnant

Prenatal Vitamins

My DH and I are TTC. I heard you should take PNV even before you become pregnant. Is that true? And do you have to get them from your OB/GYN or do over the counter ones work just as good?

  • Yes, that is true.  You can do either.  When I started taking TTC I started taking just a folic acid supplement and my OB said that was fine.  You can get prenatal formulation vitamins anywhere.

  • My OB said that you could use the prescription ones, but the OTC ones are just as good.  I use the sorta generic ones I get at Costco.

  • The recommendation is to start taking them 3-6 months before you begin TTC, but whatever your timeline, just start now. I take Target brand prenatals with a folic acid supplement and a DHA supplement. You could ask your doc for an rx, it's up to you.

  • YES---take them! My OB/GYN said to get OTC ones because they are cheaper, as long as they have enough folic acid. PNV help prevent birth defects.

  • Yes.  I agree with PP.  OB/GYN said to start taking them before TTC.  Over the counter are fine.  Just make sure they have at least 400 mcg.

  • I started taking them about three months before we started ttc.  I use generic ones from target or walmart and they are just as good as Rx ones.
  • Yes.  When I got pg with DD I tried a ton of different brands and I liked the Target brand best.  So, that is what I use.  No need for a script.

  • Good question smb! I was wondering the same thing.

  • Yes, I have been taking them for a while and I'm TTC.     They are great vitamins, and I've found that my hair and nails are really nice since taking them.

I use a brand called Full Circle.  i think they were about $12 for 120 tablets.  Not the cheapest, but not the most expensive either.   They are huge pills though.   Ugh.

  • Thanks ladies! I really appreciate the help. I'm heading out today to get some OTC pills.
