I take them and stick em in the tub with water and bleach. I also have a little blind cleaneer brush that goes between the slats.
Of course, I hardly ever actually do this, but when I do they look great.
I about had an attack when I saw how disgusting the blades of our ceiling fans were this weekend. We have them on all the time, and you can't see when they're spinning. I couldn't get on a ladder fast enough.
I'm embarrassed to admit what the frequency is. Lets just say we go a looooong time in between cleanings. When I do clean them, I put them n the bathtub to soak.

Well shi!t....nobody told me you were supposed to clean those things!
I actually dust them at least once a month or so. We have those white 2" fake wood blinds, so dust shows up pretty clearly.
I use one of those Swiffer or Pledge dusters-on-a-stick when I dust the rest of the room.
If they REALLY need help, I do think you can take them down and hose them off in the shower or yard.
