pt'ing dilemma

DS has been doing great with potty training.  I've been leaving his diaper off in the evenings, and he is accident free 90 % of the time.  He also went at the babysitters today.  He has not pooped yet on the potty.  I want to start increasing his time without a diaper.  My problem is for Thanksgiving we will be going on a 7 hour car trip.  Should I just keep going with the training and stop a lot more often on the trip, or should I try to get him fully trained after Thanksgiving?

Re: pt'ing dilemma

  • We put pull ups on DD for trips.  She is 3.5 and has been potty trained for about 5 months, but still has accidents 4 or 5 times per week.  She is mostly good at it, but when she is tired or is crying tends to pee.  She has only had one or two poop accidents in the last few months.  It is not worth the drama if she wets in her car seat.  You can put a puppy pad under him in the car, so he won't get the seat wet because that is a big PITA.

  • would a pull-up be a big setback?  He treats those just like a diaper...  Maybe one car ride is not a big deal....
  • I don't know if it is a set back for my DD or not.  She has been getting better and better with training, but still has accidents like I said.  Maybe that is because we do occasionally use a pull up with her and maybe not.  I have friends whose kids trained overnight and seldom have accidents, but I tried that method several times with DD and it was a disaster, she would go though 20 outfits in a week, even at almost 3 years old, she cried when she had accidents, we couldn't go anywhere, and our house smelled like urine.  I let her use the pull ups until she got down to just occasional accidents and she gets better all the time.

I think some kids are easier to train than others, my DD is many things, but easy is not one of them.

  • I think if he's showing that he's ready to train, there's a small window where it will be easiest, so I wouldn't risk missing that window over a trip that's a month away!  I have seen on here that some people put pull ups over underwear for long car trips in addition to stopping more frequently.  That way the kid still feels that they're getting wet but you don't ruin the carseat.  GL!
