How common is Vanishing Twin Syndrome

So I have been doing some reading on Vanishing Twin Syndrome and now I am scared.

How common is it?

I had my 1st ultrasound at 7 wks which I am reading is early detection....I am sure I am making it worse but I was just curious if anyone had any idea about how common it is.

Re: How common is Vanishing Twin Syndrome

  • AmericanPregnancy.org says "A conservative estimate of frequency is that vanishing twin syndrome occurs in 21-30% of multifetal pregnancies."
After 20 months TTC with PCOS, we were blessed with twins!

  • Thank you, I was really hoping for less.

  • they estimate that high because they believe many women have it but never know about it... it's a guess.  Most women do not have US's done that early.

try not to worry about it... you are 9 weeks, which is good- you've alraedy seen heartbeats I assume- which lowers the risk of m/c a lot, in any type of pg.

you will worry your entire pregnancy - and then even worse when the babies are out in the real world- it's a fun thing with being a mom- worry :)  You just have to learn how to deal with it.  I recommend NOT reading up on things that MIGHT happen to you- esp things you can not prevent... it will only scare you.

  • Thanks, and yes, I saw both heartbeats.  I am done "researching" VTS!
  • Stop researching it! I drove myself crazy and realistically there was nothing I could do to change it. Goldie is right- there is always something to worry about so try to focus your energy on the things that you can have an impact on. Eat lots of protein, drink lots of water, get your rest! Good luck!

  • I know how you feel! It is my greatest worry as well. My twins were also detected at 7 weeks and since then everyone seems so surprised that I had such an early ultrasound.  I recently went in for some spotting and was reassured that everything is ok.  I don't think the worrying will ever stop but I have tried to focus on the good and put lots of positive thought their way.
