That is what we did for our 1st DC. I never had an infant carrier for him.
Hmm... that is interesting about the consumer reports thing. I never heard that. I just knew is was a well rated seat.
Kelly Moore Classic Camera Bag in Grey, Shootsac, Hipslip, Lightroom 3, Canon Rebel xti, Speedlite 430 EXII, 18-55mm(kit), 55-250mm(kit), 50mm 1.8, Canon EF 24-70mm f2.8L and Canon EF 100mm f2.8L Macro IS USM
... Wishing for time to practice, a 5d Mark II (or III if it is coming), Canon 70-200 2.8L Canon 16-35L and willing models.
Consumer reports is not a reliable source for car seat info. They all pass the same test and all have the same standards and some of CRs info isnt accurate.
If you want a seat that is great for newborns that will last longer, I cant say enough good things about the First Years True Fit. It's one of the only convertible seats on the market that's actually GREAT for infants, the top headrest is removable so that it takes up less room while RF with an infant, it allows for extended RF and it has one of the tallest shells and harness heights, which allows for use of the 5pt harness until kids are developmentally ready for a booster (around age 5 or 6).
Britaxes are rated at 5 pounds and up, BUT their bottom slots are too tall for a newborn. Most babies don't fit until 4-5 months because the slots have to be at or below their shoulders.
The True Fit that Emilie mentioned is a great option as a convertible for newborns and up--it has low bottom slots, has a tall shell and harness height, etc. The down side is that it only rearfaces to 35 pounds, but most people don't keep their kids rearfacing for that long.
Another option is the Sunshine Kids Radian. It is rear-facing to 40 pounds, has low top slots, a tall shell, and any of them besides the 65s come with an infant insert.
If you want to skip the bucket, I'd recommend one of those two--they could easily keep a child harnessed from newborn to 5 years old (at least).
Mom to J (10), L (4), and baby #3 arriving in July of 2015

I would have to disagree. They are not perfect (and they apologized for their car seat reporting error, which had the crash testing done at the wrong speed), but I am a big fan of independent testing of car seats. I have an uncle that works for CR and I am amazed at their thoroughness.

I was going to say about the same as she said.
Also with emilie cr is not a place to listen to for car seat advice.
