WHY are you anti H1N1 vaccine?

I have tons of RL friends who are agonizing over whether or not to get the vax.

NOTHING I have read says it's bad; all of our doctors say to get it.  My university's masters in public health program is pro-vaccine.  I just don't see the downside.

Do you not believe the timeframe argument put out by the CDC?  Are you skeptical of govt. healthcare programs in general?  Why not get it?  Is it the thimerisol?

I am really curious, not being snarky

Re: WHY are you anti H1N1 vaccine?

  • Why inject your body with something that is totally unnecessary?  My family is otherwise healthy --- no compromised immune system.
I'll take my chances with getting the flu VERSUS taking my chances with injecting us with something foreign AND still getting the flu!

  • How would there be anything saying it's bad?  It's too new to even have any idea what the side effects could be.

See, but that's the part I don't get-- because every seasonal flu vaccine is "too new" so what kinds of side effects are we talking about?  The same ones that happened in 76?

  • I'm not "anti-H1N1 vax," I'm just not sold on it that he needs it. And to make things even more complicated, I'm pro-flu shot for him. I guess because he's always got the flu shot. His doc is 99% sure that DS already had H1N1, so my thoughts now are: why does he need the vax if he's already had and fought the virus? (his doc still says DS should get the shot)

Plus, I don't think it's available here yet. He got his flu shot yesterday, they were out of the mist (I didn't want the mist anyway) and only had a couple flu shots left.

  • ditto to both pp.  I just think we are getting to vaccine happy. i am also against the regular flu shot and the chicken pox vaccine.  What's next a common cold shot?  Our bodies need to be able to build immunitities on its own to fight these things.  Or at least that is how I see it.

  • I guess I just feel like doctors, scientists, and researchers are for it, then I am not in a position to second guess them.
  • Hmm.... you have a point-- maybe that's what's going to happen, we'll have vax's for everything then our bodies will not have to learn how to fight anything, then terrorist will throw over some virus and wipe us all out-because our immune systems have stopped having to work.

(total conspiracy theory, and I'm 99% joking) :)

  • See, just because "dr's and scientists" say it is a good idea doesn't mean I am not in position to questions them.  They are not gods. I don't have to blindly trust them with out question.

My dd had the regular flu shot for the first time this year beacuse she's in pre school now.  She was sick for 5 days after.  She won't be getting that again either.

  • Wow I just got into a discussion like this on FB. A girl from High school asked what evryone was doing and when I said I was probably going to get it she went on to try to prove how right she is and how no one knows what the vaccine will do down the road. I told her my uncle is at the cleveland clinic working as a doctor of infectious diseases and I tend to trust his input well of course she went off saying he would have no idea what will happen in the future. I just dont get it, I mean what can a dead flu virus cause in the future? I mean seriously I just don't know...I tend to like to follow the people like my uncle who are doing research and I know they can mess up but imo its better than going based on speculation...

I don;t think they're gods at all.  BUT as someone with a PhD, I really respect people with large amounts of education and training and consider them experts in their fields.  In my mind, a doctor w/ a public health degree is sort of the top of the line when it comes to vaccine advice.   I have done my own reading and research, but I am not the expert here; they are. (and I say this as someone who actually IS an expert in a field of study-- just not this field :)

  • No, I agree with that.  I just feel that there are a lot of people out there that blindly follow what "they" say and never think for themselves.

In addition, not all experts in this particular field DO think it's a good idea.  That's why I question it.  The girl next to me at work for example...6 months pregnant and her OB told her she did not recommend her getting the H1N1 vaccine.  Poor thing is so confused now she is about to have a breakdown over this decision that should be so simple.

It's not new. It's just like every seasonal flu virus that comes out every year....it just so happens that it's a specific flu strain.

And to the person who says it's putting a foreign object into your body....hahahaha....pretty much everything you put in and on your body is made up of some kind of "foreign" substance.

You know the flu shot is a dead virus, right? That's a coincidence. You cannot get the flu from the flu shot. A sore arm, sure. Sick? No.

  • Jaylea is correct.  You cannot get the flu (or symptoms of the flu) from the shot.  You can get it from the mist though.  If you DC was sick for 5 days after he flu SHOT then your DC was exposed to the flu before the shot.  BTW...it takes 1-2 weeks before the flu shot is effective.
  • DS's pedi was advising not to get it because it's so new -- these were his words. I'm not anti, but I'm certainly taking his opinion into consideration.

  • She had the nasal mist, which happens to contain live virus.  She got a 103 fever the very next day, and complained of sore legs.  All side effects of the mist.  I'm sorry, I should have clarified that.  I am not stupid, I know the shot is a dead virus.
