Preemies

Dogs and Preemies??

Are there any precautions I should take regarding my dog (I have a chihuahua who sheds a decent amount) and our LO? I know all the normal baby stuff, and I plan on asking LOs doctor, but I wanted to ask you ladies if there was anything I should know before having my parents bring the dog back (they have had him since the first time I was hospitalized, a month ago). TIA!

Re: Dogs and Preemies??

  • our dog sheds quite a bit for a short-hair, but we figured it was a full-time job to sweep up all the hair all the time, so we don't worry too much about that.  so far, so good.  at first, we didn't let the dog lick the baby, but now that we are confident in DS's health, we let the dog lick anything but his face.  we also just keep an eye on the dog's reaction to DS's grabbing/pulling/etc. to make sure she doesn't bite the baby or get aggressive.
  • Our Yellow Lab is a shedding machine.  Neither one of my girls (both preemies) have had a problem with her.  In fact they spend most of their day hugging, climbing, and trying to ride her.  :)

  • Our dog (a springer) sheds moderately.  We don't let him too close to DD (he's licked her feet a couple of times) and we haven't had any problems.
  • it's actually better for their health to have pets around. They have a lower incidence of allergies & asthma later..

  • We have a yellow lab as well and she has been kissing DD since the day she came home.  Now DD climbs all over the dog and is always has dog hair on her clothes.  I think it is good for them to be around dogs.

I was concerned as well. I knew the studies, but wasn't sure that would apply to a preemie with lung issues. We have three cats and our dog just passed away in August. Just before Robbie came home from the NICU I asked our doctor and she actually actively encouraged me to keep all the pets and let them interact because it's better for him.

She said the theory is that in caveman days we all lived in caves together, exposed to everything from the beginning- that's how our immune systems knew what it needed to attack and what it didn't. They think that being exposed early "trains" the body that XYZ are acceptable and don't need to be "fought off."

  • as long as he doesn't like aaron's face, we're ok with it. we let him lick his feet, etc, and sniff him lots so that when aaron's older he's used to it. we also make aaron's hand touch the dog a lot too
