Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Likely Flammable ?'s about solids

1) I have a veggie steamer & a food processor - can I make my own baby food with these items?  I have seen tons of pricey baby food makers out there and I'm not sure if they're necessary.  What am I missing here?

2) I always assumed I would give baby food at room temp...we have been doing formula at room temp and just started rice cereal at room temp.  I was surprised to look at some of the jars of baby food and they had microwave instructions...is this necessary?  I always assumed (perhaps incorrectly) that is was ok to serve at room temp - sweet potato, squash, etc.. thoughts?  I guess I prefer food if it is warmed (of course), so I guess my LO would too, but wanted to know what other folks are doing.  Is room temp okay too?

  • I serve all baby food at room temp.

Yes, you can make your own baby food with the appliances you have. The baby-specific ones are mostly a gimic.

  • 1)  I used my regular food processor and the veggie steamer basket I have for a pot.  I never bought a special item and never felt like any of them would make life particularly easier.

    2)  DD always had food room temp. and never seemed to mind.

  • I hadn't thought about temperature.  Good question!
  • 1) Yes, you can.  No gadgets needed.

    2) Room temp is fine, but I would usually warm up a little so it was closer to body temp since baby is EBF.  Also, I make extra food ahead and freeze it, so sometimes the warming process makes it a bit warmer than room temp.

  • 1) I use a pot, steamer basket and a blender or hand blender.

    2) I do room temp or slightly warmed if the food has been thawing in the fridge.

  • 1) Yes...no need for any extra equipment. I just either steam or bake my veggies and then process the heck out of them.

    2) Veggies are usually heated - would you like to eat cold carrots or squash? That's the way I look at it! :) The closer she gets to real food the more I think about how I'd like it prepared. Fruit is almost always cold or room temp. FWIW, we do room temp bottles - never warmed them.

  • 1) I used my microwave to cook and my blender to puree... and my icecube trays to freeze

    2) Generally room temp, unless it was frozen and I defrosted it then sometimes it was slighlty warmed

  • Yes I make my own. Have a beaba and love it to pieces...I warm everything to "body temp" LO is EBF and that is what she is used to and what she seems to like.
