BF moms help me understand this behavior please

DD latches on then yanks herself off right after she latches. She does this over and over. I thought maybe she wasn't getting any milk out but it was coming out. So I thought maybe she just isn't hungry but then she sticks her fingers in her mouth to a point that she starts gagging. What can this be?

Is your let-down too fast? Or is she distracted?

my DD does this on occasion too - minus the finger gagging.  i think she's just distracted or playing.  after a few minutes of me ignoring her, she usually latches and does her thing......

Maybe it is the letdown then? Before it was really fast but it regulated. Maybe it's just fast again.

Sounds like a forceful let-down...do you have plenty of milk? I had too much at first ad now still make more than she needs. She finally learned to take herself off to get a breath and start over again. Sounds like it's the same with you.

It's a phase, she'll grow out of it eventually.

This happened to me the entire time I was nursing Baby Diamond...and I have no answers.  Nursing was never as easy as latch-suck-pull off - switch sides - latch-suck-pull off - be happy for us. It was latch-pull off - latch - pull off...  <throws self a Remember How Hard Nursing Was For You pity party right in the middle of Mavila's post>
