Go to NAEYC.org and you can search for centers by state and town. They are an accrediting agency that has MUCH higher standards than the state. They are usually higher priced and have wait lists but honestly, do you really want to send your child to a place where the person might not have even graduated from high school??
I have heard that the Eliot child care center is great (I think you have to be an employee though).
I have heard horrible things about the VNA child care center. Stay far far away!!
And go with your gut feelings. If you walk in and instantly feel uneasy, LEAVE.
