Convertible crib vs. Regular?

What are all of your thoughts on this?  I originally thought we wanted convertible since it seemed practical, but then I was talking with a friend and may just get a regular crib.. this is our first and we are planning to have more, so I'm thinking rather than convert it, we'll use the crib for baby #2, and end up getting a "big kid bed" when he/ she is ready to get out of it.  It also seems like a lot less $$ getting a regular one.

Is there something I am missing as far as benefits of the convertible?  Thoughts?  Thanks!!

Re: Convertible crib vs. Regular?

  • I'm definitely only getting a standard crib. I do not see the value in a convertible because I think they all look really odd when they are converted (in other words, you can tell that it isn't a normal bed, they look a little off to me). Plus, like you, we plan for more kids so I will need a crib as a crib for several years to come.

I'll just buy regular beds for the kids as they transition.

  • Mines stationary, but you can buy a kit to turn it to a toddler bed... I doubt that I will buy the kit, at least to start.  We hope to have another baby (trying again after about a year) so by the time that one is born, the first should be about ready to transition to a bed.
  • a convertible crib does have some benefits but my thought is by the time i will need to use it as a toddler bed I will probbaly have another baby on the way so really until it can be used in the guest room someday i dont see the point

I'm thinking basically the same thing!

  • I wanted a crib with a drop side, since I'm so short. I also felt that the convertible ones were too expensive as well. We were able to get a twin mattress set for DD big girl bed for $299 and the crib will move to the new babies room.

This definitely ... don't want to spend the extra money because honestly, I'm not really into the look of the convertible beds when they're converted ... we're definitely going with a standard bed ... plus honestly, I can't commit to a headboard at this time ... standard crib it is ... then on to a regular bed ...

  • I don't think I've known anyone who's actually converted their crib into the toddler bed. Ours converted, but DS was ready for more space and went straight to a twin bed.
  • We did convertible for DD, b/c we got high-quality furniture, and it all, incl the crib/bed, will last until DD moves out! Ours, btw, does not look 'odd' once it's transitioned to a full-size bed. It was set up that way in the store and looked lovely- like it was always a regular bed.

For this baby though, we're getting a regular crib, or maybe just a less-expensive convertible. This LO's room will be what's now our guest room, which has beautiful furniture (bed, nightstand, and large chest of drawers/dresser). We are keeping that furniture so LO can grow into it.

  • We want a convertible because we're planning on a few years between kids and part of getting little brother/sister will be a new bedroom set for this one...
  • We got a convertible crib by DaVinci for $220 that obviously did not cost a ton of money.  We will probably won't use the toddler bed feature until our last baby but I just really loved the crib.  If we decide to wait just a little extra time in between children then this child may use it for a little bit as a toddler bed and then we will buy her a  "big girl" bed.

  • I agree with most posters! We have a convertable crib and now I am due in March...so instead of buying another crib, I am giving the baby my sons and I just bought him a single bed for his room..which he loves!

I think the convertable is a waste unless you plan on not having more children..or buying that 2nd child their own convertable crib as well. Ours was a waste this first time...but now our second child will use it converted when they are ready.
