dog medicine...

we recently found out our dog has a yeast infection in her ears.  They gave us some kind of steroid meds for her.  When i read the warnings there are tons for pregnant dogs.  Should i call the doctor to see if it is safe for us to even use it while im pregnant? I dont even touch the tube of meds since there are warnings for pregnant dogs it cant be safe for pregnant women

Re: dog medicine...

  • I would just wear gloves if you are worried, or wash your hands after you apply it. It won't stay on your hands to absorb in, I bet you will be fine. A steroid cream won't get rid of the yeast though, just get rid of the inflammation, did they put your dog on an antifungal too??

  • I doubt it. I am a vet tech and handle all kinds of meds everyday and specifically asked my OB if it's safe.

    What were you prescribed?

  • I give my dog her flea/heartworm pill every month and the safety of handling it has never crossed my mind.  I'm not ingesting or putting medication on me so I figure it's safe.

  • The big worry about preg./nursing dogs is the meds crossing the blood-brain barrier and into milk.  But the steriod dose is so low for humans it won't harm your fetus.

You don't have to worry about it, but you can always wear gloves if you want.  As a Vet. Nurse I'd only worry about handling chemo meds and others that destroy rapidly dividing cells.
