Are you guys putting the bumper on the crib? I never really thought twice about it, but not my sil is telling me it's a HUGE no-no... Personally I think out bedding is adorable and totally want it on, but OBVIOUSLY if it causes harm I would't want to.
Re: bumpers
It's definitely a personal choice - and opinions can get heated, I've found!
I haven't really decided yet. We may go breathable bumper... Not 100% certain yet.
Agreed. I'm using one. If it turns into an issue, I'll take it out.
We are/were worried about the sam thing so we decided we'd only have one until baby can roll over. Then we got to thinking about it and figure it really wont be on that long (what, 6 months at max?) so its not worth wasting the money. We'll be too tired to really care what the crib looks like and baby wont remember it so whats the point?
This is what a friend of mine told me when I asked her...
"The problem with bumper pads is the possibility of sids. If they end up with their faces against it they could be smothered (same as using blankets). Once they learn to roll over and lift their heads it is no longer a problem. DS can hold his head up really well now, so when we move him into the crib I could probably put the bumper pads back."
I used bumpers, and my son was in a 50 year old crib. I'm so bad.
Though- If anyone were to have a premie or a baby diagnosed with breathing problems I would use a breathable, or skip it all together.
this ... this is my biggest concern ... baby rolling against the bumper and not being able to breath ... many health agencies (American Academy of Pediatrics) and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) awareness groups recommend that parents skip the crib bumper, that using these products may actually put children at greater risk for suffocation or death. For me ... a cute matching bumper isn't really that serious ...
Once a baby can roll, they can usually roll away too. When you have your LO, you'll see. There might be a week where they can only rool right to left, and for that week it would make sense to take the bumpers out (because they can't roll away) but then the next week, BAM they can roll in both directions. You'll know whether or not you're comfortable with bumpers once your baby starts to move.
For me DS started to roll and immediately could roll 10X in one direction. He would do it ti get toys. A few days later he could roll both directions and also do the Homer Simpson (laying down can turn 360 degrees). I felt very confident in his ability to avoid suffocating himself.
-I guess what I'm trying to say is, you'll know what's right for you when the time comes.
This is what I am doing.

my currently-reading shelf:
not "responsible" but that there is a "correlation" ... or a "link" to SIDS
hehe... Bumpers are sophisticated, aren't they
we used one for DS and I never worried. I didn't take it out till he was 9 mos and started climbing on top of it.
but for this baby we are not going to buy one (maybe the breathable one). it is really probably best to not get one and just an extra expense! they are cute though!!! we are just going to buy a cool, funky sheet to dress up the crib.
two of my friends bought over $300 crib sets and ended up not using the bumper b/c of fear of their lo rolling into...etc. just dont let that happen to you!
This is wrong. The risk of SIDS is different than the risk of suffocation. The baby doesn't have to be anywhere near the bumper for it to be a SIDS risk. Drives me crazy when I see people saying they will take the bumpers out when baby starts to roll - bumpers are considered dangerous from day one.
Also....I had no idea that blankets could make my kids sophisticated.
