bumpers

Are you guys putting the bumper on the crib?  I never really thought twice about it, but not my sil is telling me it's a HUGE no-no... Personally I think out bedding is adorable and totally want it on, but OBVIOUSLY if it causes harm I would't want to.

Re: bumpers

  • I know plenty of babies (including myself and my SKs) who have survived the all-feared bumper. I'm going to use one.
  • Loading the player...
  • Yeah ... i really want mine on also but I'm currently looking for alternatives ... the "breathable" ones are NOT attractive but I am concerned about safety ... suffocation, etc. So, I'm on the hunt ... I know most babies are okay but I don't want to be that one of many stories so I'm seriously thinking about this one ...
  • I'm using a mesh breathable bumper.
  • My sis put my nieces down where it was between the mattress and the crib, and let about 2 inches stick up to keep little things from falling out, i.e. pacifier, and low enough where my niece couldnt use it as a catupult to get out of the crib. (Yeah, that spelling was way off lol brain is fried today)
  • It's definitely a personal choice - and opinions can get heated, I've found!

I haven't really decided yet. We may go breathable bumper... Not 100% certain yet.

  • It's a personal decision to make. I used them. I just recently took them off when DD started trying to climb out. They are great (IMO) when the baby is about 9 months on up 'cause they scoot all over the crib & bump their head. By that point DD could pull herself up in the crib anyways, if she rolled into the bumper she'd turn the other way and roll out of it. Now she wakes up crying sometimes 'cause she's whacked her head :-(

  • I think we will. We'll see I guess, I don't plan on using the crib until baby is 8-10 weeks old. Everyone I know who has a baby says the baby doesnt even go near the bumpers, plus it seems like it's also a risk to have baby hit it's head/hands/etc. on the wood of a bumperless crib.

Agreed. I'm using one. If it turns into an issue, I'll take it out.

  • We are/were worried about the sam thing so we decided we'd only have one until baby can roll over. Then we got to thinking about it and figure it really wont be on that long (what, 6 months at max?) so its not worth wasting the money. We'll be too tired to really care what the crib looks like and baby wont remember it so whats the point?

  • I think I've decided to use one. But I'm making sure it's tightly filled and has ties both top and bottom.
  • This is what a friend of mine told me when I asked her...

"The problem with bumper pads is the possibility of sids. If they end up with their faces against it they could be smothered (same as using blankets). Once they learn to roll over and lift their heads it is no longer a problem. DS can hold his head up really well now, so when we move him into the crib I could probably put the bumper pads back."

  • We used a regular bumper with D until he became a crazy sleeper and would try to sleep with his face pressed against it.  He didn't know how to roll over yet, so it freaked me out.  We ended up putting up breathable bumpers, which are pretty worthless, IMO.  They fall down pretty easily (which is actually a plus when your kid tries to stand on them) and D doesn't really need it.
  • we plan on taking it out of the crib when the baby can roll over and put it back in when the baby can both roll over and lift his/her head.
  • We're also still debating this...  We've registered for a bedding set with a bumper and I also placed a seperate breathable bumper on there.  I guess I don't think it's a big worry until baby knows how to roll over since they don't move a whole lot the first few months anyway. IMO

  • I used bumpers, and my son was in a 50 year old crib.  I'm so bad.

Though- If anyone were to have a premie or a baby diagnosed with breathing problems I would use a breathable, or skip it all together.

  • well I had one with dd (no one told me it was a bad idea) She also slept in the PNP bassinet for 3 mos. then went in the crib bumper and all.. We will see. I am def putting it on for show while LO sleeps in PNP.

this ... this is my biggest concern ... baby rolling against the bumper and not being able to breath ... many health agencies (American Academy of Pediatrics) and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) awareness groups recommend that parents skip the crib bumper, that using these products may actually put children at greater risk for suffocation or death. For me ... a cute matching bumper isn't really that serious ...

  • We're skipping it for the possible relationship to SIDS and suffocation.  Also, I really don't care for them aesthetically.  I don't like most bedding sets anyway.

Once a baby can roll, they can usually roll away too.  When you have your LO, you'll see.  There might be a week where they can only rool right to left, and for that week it would make sense to take the bumpers out (because they can't roll away) but then the next week, BAM they can roll in both directions.  You'll know whether or not you're comfortable with bumpers once your baby starts to move.

For me DS started to roll and immediately could roll 10X in one direction. He would do it ti get toys.  A few days later he could roll both directions and also do the Homer Simpson (laying down can turn 360 degrees).  I felt very confident in his ability to avoid suffocating himself.

-I guess what I'm trying to say is, you'll know what's right for you when the time comes.

  • We used ours at first, but ended up taking it off after one too many mid-night sheet changes.  There's just something about those wet and poopy diapers the first few weeks...they are explosive!!  And the bumper just never got put back up.  You will get flamed on here saying to have a breathable one.  I say just go with your gut  :)
  • there's no proof that bumpers are responsible for SIDS ..some draw that conclusion based upon the fact too much bedding/blankets HAS been linked to SIDS due to the potential for sophistication, but to me that's a leap. I'm using them..

not "responsible" but that there is a "correlation" ... or a "link" to SIDS

hehe... Bumpers are sophisticated, aren't they :)

  • we used one for DS and I never worried.  I didn't take it out till he was 9 mos and started climbing on top of it.

but for this baby we are not going to buy one (maybe the breathable one).  it is really probably best to not get one and just an extra expense!  they are cute though!!!  we are just going to buy a cool, funky sheet to dress up the crib.

two of my friends bought over $300 crib sets and ended up not using the bumper b/c of fear of their lo rolling into...etc.  just dont let that happen to you!  :)

This is wrong.  The risk of SIDS is different than the risk of suffocation.  The baby doesn't have to be anywhere near the bumper for it to be a SIDS risk.  Drives me crazy when I see people saying they will take the bumpers out when baby starts to roll - bumpers are considered dangerous from day one.

Also....I had no idea that blankets could make my kids sophisticated.
