Babies on the Brain

how old is too old? i'm scared!

My age is the ONLY thing keeping me from TTC.

I have 10 yr old and 2 yr old sons, and they are my joy.  I turned 34 (my husband is 31) in July, and am feeling the clock pounding!  I don't want to be 99 when my grandkids are born, and don't want to be in a walker at highschool graduation either.  In my (&dh) family, babies were all in the 20's, grandkids came when you hit 50.

Am I making too much of it?  Is it true moms in general are older these days?  Of course I consider other things too, but this issue is really prominent in my mind.  TIA!

  • You're making too much of it.  If you want another kid (and your DH does too, and your financially capable of doing so) go for it.

  • your ovaries shrivel up at 35. This is a proven fact. Better get crackin.

If you want more kids then do it. plain and simple.

  • HAHAHAHAHAHA.

    :::deep breaths:::

    HAHAHAHAHAHA.

    Since when is 34 old?!?

  • My mom had my brother and sister at 36 and 38 and they're all just fine and so is mom.

  • ::deletes initial response::

Yes you are making too much of it. And let me tell you, 34 isn't even considered AMA (advanced maternal age) from a medical standpoint.

If you've got all that math worked out about being 99 with grandkids and don't want to, that's your call.

But from a pure age perspective, no. It's not too old.

  • Oh...

    and

My mom had me at 29, brother at 31, my sister at 33, and my twin brothers at 38.

That means she'll be 55 when Baby Prepster is born next year.  I don't think that is near death.

You, my friend, kinda sound lame.

  • holy snarky ***....

get your laugh?  if it's not something you can relate to, don't reply.  second, having had my 1st at 23 I do feel old(er).  i know it is not yet concerned advanced maternal age, its like I said- in my family history 34 would literally be the oldest anyone was pg.

it's a big decision, and needed advice.  for a minute I actually thought I might get some.  my bad.

  • I totally understand. I too, take all my big decisions to message boards full of strangers. I find that they have the clarity that I often lack.

I'm 25 and am freaking out about having this kid at 26. Eeeeek. GL and lots of ovary unwrinkling dust to you!

They are so rude aren't they?

I'll be 32 when this little demon is born and I can feel it in me bones. The knee pops, the backaches. I can't imagine being two years older and doing this. I feel ancient and I'm afraid the good doctor and nurses will choke on all my old dusty cooch during delivery.

Studies have shown that children born to parents who didn't have their first child until they were past 30 have a higher IQ and more success.  If you'd skipped the first kid, you'd be fine, but as it is, you've already ruined your kids' chances at success and should definitely not reproduce again.

    and this is just awesome

  • I'm an idiot?  Harsh for a stranger, no?

The fact that people use a public message board for insults is waaaayy better than for advice-I'm just a mess!  And to think you are all soooo brilliant that you can back up eachothers comments with some playful banter.  So much smarter than me.  Thanks for setting me straight.

You would never have the BALLS to say this to my face-or anyones for that matter.  First, go f*ck yourself, if your intent was malicious.  Second, I feel sorry for your children (or potential offspring) to have mothers that would go out of their way to exploit another woman's issue for their own pleasure.

If this is not your reality, great.  But there is something called empathy.  You can imagine what its like to be in anothers shoes, or you can sit on your high horse and judge.  Good luck with that.

And way to be another cliche.

  • lucky - you'll be fine at age 34.  Sure you're older than you used to be, but unless there are any health issues identified by your doc, you shouldn't have any problems.  Many many women conceive in their mid-late 30s and beyond.  And things were different when our parents were young - ppl married and had kids at age 20.  Not so in the 21st century.  Don't worry about what your family thinks.  Do what's right for you.  :)

    Well said, Isha.

OP, you have a self-created "issue" of self-created importance, and thank the dear lord these women are around to make you come crashing back down to reality. I feel sorry for your children, what with being raised by a woman who obviously has one foot in the grave at 32.

Look at it this way, old woman. You can buy diapers and Depends in bulk at Costco together and save a bundle.

  • Cathy gave you a really great answer and you didn't thank her.
  • Actually, you are considered of 'advanced maternal age' if you will be 35 on your due date.  So technically, someone who is just over 34 could be considered advanced.  I understand your thinking, and the risks are higher the older you get.  It sounds like many women are in denial about their age, here.  34 is not old, but it is not that young either.  That said, if you want a baby discuss it with your doctor and look at your individual risk factors.
