Bare Minerals makeup

So I just noticed that the skin rev er upper (its a moisturizer you use before applying makeup) has salicylic acid.  It never even crossed my mind that it would contain this.  I didn't use it every day but it still irritates me that I stayed clear of face washes and other acne treatments and here I was using it all along.  Anyone else using it?  I stopped using it of course after I bought a new $20 bottle. :-(

Re: Bare Minerals makeup

  • I have a bottle but I haven't been using it.
  • Loading the player...
  • Is that the primer?
  • The skin revver upper is kind of like a skin resurfacer.... Prime Time is the one that comes with the kit, and I'm pretty sure that one doesn't have anything bad in it.  I still don't usually use it though.

  • Every make-up I've ever tried has made me break out so I finally splurged on bare minerals. It did the same thing- made my face burn. AFTER I returned $80 worth of make-up someone mentioned it was probably the primer. I never thought to look at the ingredients in the primer.

Indifferent  I have no idea what any of that is, but if the make-up doesn't have a ton of ingredients (I think they told me there are only 4?) then it most likely was the primer that was my problem and not the make-up.

I have INCREDIBLY sensitive skin and break out super easily. I use Bare Minerals, just without any of their creams and stuff. I prep with Clinique Moisturizing Gel and then just use the BM Dust. It's the only thing that works for my crazy face.

...Not that I have worn makeup more than a handful of times in the last year. Lol

If it burned, maybe you are sensitive to the vitamin C in the primer... No idea.. If you have a sephora near you, maybe they could give you a sample of just the bare minerals makeup and you could do a test patch before you buy the whole thing again.

I actually have a bare minerals store. It's called bare escentuals though...I think they're the same thing though.

  • Yeah I think that bare escentuals is the main product, but the actual foundation is called bare minerals.. I could be wrong, all my stuff is upstairs and I'm too lazy to go look.  ;)
  • Cool. I'll have to stop in and give it another try!
  • I've never used the primer...that is probably what did that to your face.  Do you think the stuff I used had enough salicylic acid to be concerned?  I'm such a worrier, I hate it!

Personally I wouldn't use it.  I haven't worried about cleansers/body washes that have salicylic acid in them because they just get rinsed off right away-- but I think I'd steer clear of anything that sits on the skin like a lotion/serum.

I'd discontinue use for now and ask your OB to be sure.

Sorry to hijack your thread! I would stop using it until you can ask your OB. I can't specifically remember if salicylic acid is bad for you, but I agree with what Love-A-Bug said...because it sits on your skin I'd skip it until you know for sure.

  • Yeah, I'm definitely not using it anymore.  Just makes me mad that I've been so good about staying clear from any of this..and here I was using it the whole time!

I'm sure you didn't do any harm, don't beat yourself up too much about it, but definitely ask your OB before using it anymore. Wink

  • I keep reading stuff on the internet which I should not be doing.  I only used it every now and then..but you know how the worrying goes.  :-)

Oh, I learned loooong ago that google can be BAD! Step away =)

  • I don't use the primer, but I do use some of bare minerals makeup. I love bare escentuals.

  • Unless you're eating the lotion, you're fine.  When you consider the amount of salicyclic acid in the product (usually 2%), with the small amount that you use (at most probably a pea sized amount), and the fact that usually only 5-10% is actually absorbed by your skin - you can see that very little of the drug actually makes it into your blood stream.  Low dose aspirin (100 mg) has been shown to be safe during pregnancy.  The amount of salicyclic acid absorbed by a lotion would be much less than 100 mg.

What you really need to be concerned about in fact ltions are retinoic acid(aka retinol) and accutane.

Here is a recent reference from the OTIS group, a reputable scientific group which compiles and evaluates studies of birth defects in children.

  • I use BM but I don't use the lotion. I personally wouldn't use it in lotion form, although there is a train of thought that says its fine in face wash because you wash it off.

Its fine. Just get another primer and still use BM products.
