2nd Trimester

Sleeping pills?

Does anyone know...can we take something like unisom to make staying asleep easier?  Honestly, I'll survive if I can't take anything, but life would be less exhausting if I could sleep decently through out the night... :)

And I'd like to avoid benedryl since it's drying out my sinuses like nothing else.  Thanks!

Re: Sleeping pills?

  • Yes, you can take unisom.

I couldn't live without it during my first tri.

  • I've never looked into this but when I was in the hospital on bedrest with DS they offered me sleeping pills all the time.  I never took them though, my Dr's would always ask how I was sleeping and when I told them like crap they offered me Ambien I think? Ugh pregnancy+mommy brain I can't remember shiit!
  • I was told no sleeping aids.

  • Yes, you can take Unisom.  Be aware that the gelcaps have the same ingredient as Benadryl, but the tablets are different.  It does work similarly to Benadryl, so you may notice that it dries up your sinuses as well.

I took the tablets and I never noticed that it dried my sinuses.

Unisom is often recommended by doctors to combat nausea. All it ever did for me was knock me out so I never took it during the day. But for my whole first tri and most of second my nighttime routine was Zofran + B6 + Unisom and I was actually able to sleep at night.

  • My DR will let me take Ambien occassionally. :)

You may not have noticed dried out sinuses, but since the OP has problems with Benadryl (diphenhydramine), it is definitely a possibility with Unisom (doxylamine) because they are both antihistamines with anticholinergic side effects, which include dry mouth/mucous membranes.

I know, I was just commenting.

ETA: that came out kinda snotty...I didn't mean it that way.

  • My Dr prescribed Ambien for me when I mentioned I was having trouble sleeping. I don't take them very often (like 3 total so far!) but they have been wonderful when I did need them!

Tylenol pm is benadryl (diphenhydramine) with tylenol in it. A lot of doctors do use Ambien during pregnancy-especially after 1st trimester. I just talked to a pregnant nurse (with twins) a few weeks ago and she is on it.  I used to sell it and have had lots and lots of conversations with doctors about the safety and most never had an issue with but talk to your doctor.

  • Thanks for all the responses!  I'll double check with my dr. to be sure.  I was okayed for the benedryl originally for allergies, but now that that season is over with here, hopefully he'll okay something else.
