Protein question.

So I don't feel that I have been getting enough protein. I just don't have too much of an appetite in general. Well I was wondering, I have protein powder for shakes when I was going to the gym, is it still safe to drink protein shakes while pregnant. It doesn't have any warnings on the container. Any thoughts? TIA!

Re: Protein question.

  • How about a Carnation instant breakfast?  I think those are protein shakes, of sorts, but aren't jam-packed with a ton-a ton-a protein.  Know what I mean?

  • Yes!!  It is safe, and a good way to get your protein and fruits in.
  • That is a good idea! They probably taste a little better too. I have always had to mask the taste of the shake with peanut butter :)

Have you been drinking protein shakes? If so what brand do you use. I am mainly afraid that they chock it full of vitamins/minerals and I am not sure they are all recommended you know?

  • Yes they are safe in general ... but it depends on the type of protein that you're wanting to consume. Stay away from soy protein ... it's been associated with some concerns regarding fetal development. On the other hand whey protein is fine ... made from cows milk. Any whey protein powder should be fine ...
  • Can you make egg dishes?  Eggs are the one of the highest source of protein and so easy to make - quiche, omlets, custard, egg salad...  Shrimp is another really good source of protein, so is peanut butter.  It's usually better for your body to get it out of food naturally than to try and add the artificial stuff to something.

This- The Carnation Instant Breakfast "shake" in chocolate is so yummy!

  • I would also recommend Greek Yogurt.  It has a ton of protein compared to regular yogurt and is a good source of calsium too.
  • I would be careful with protein powders.  Before getting pregnant, I used protein powder every single day.  Once I got pregnant though, I wanted to avoid artificial sweeteners...I have yet to find a protein powder that doesn't contain some form of artificial sweetening.  Many of them contain stevia now-a-days, which is said to be all-natural, but it's also not thought of as safe in pregnany yet because it hasn't been on the market long enough to know if there are any repurcussions.

Anyway, long story short, if you're trying to avoid artificial sweeteners, I would skip the protein powder.  And if you know of a protein powder that doesn't contain artificial sweetener, please enlighten me!  I'd love to be able to use it again!
