Caeser salad a "fetal no no"????

I just got my What to Expect email for the day and it said that caeser salads are a fetal no no.  Does anyone know why???  I'm a little freaked out now because I had one a few weeks ago...which I ended up throwing a lot of it up, but I'm sure some of it got to the baby.  I had no idea that I wasn't supposed to eat them, I love them!

  • UH OH!...I hope this gets answered pretty soon.
  • Caesar dressing is made with raw egg.
  • Well you learn something new every day!  I guess I'm glad I couldn't keep it down then!  Thanks!

  • It's got raw egg in it so there's a chance of samilnila (sp?) poisening when you eat it.  It's harder for you to fight off infection when you are pregnant so pregnant women shouldn't eat it.  I think if you recovered fine the baby should be fine, but you may want to check with you doctor.

I say recovered assuming you got sick from the salad (since you said you threw it up).  If you were just sick from morning sickness and not food poisening then I think you should be okay.

  • Just so you know not all of the dressings are made with raw egg.  Some store bought versions are not so check labels, and ask at restaurants.  I do know that Panera's is made with egg so a no go there!
  • Hmmm....interesting. I've eaten more than one ceasar salad, and don't get me started on cookie dough....om nom nom

  • Uh, guys ... most caeser dressings aren't made with raw eggs anymore, unless it's homemade. You're safe with the store bought kind (at least in the US). If you're in a restaurant, just ask. But usually, it's perfectly fine to eat.

  • however, a lot of restaurants are now tempering the eggs prior to putting them i the dressing.  it allows it to keep the raw-like texture/consistency without putting a raw egg in it.  It's like custard.  Custard is traditionally made with raw egg, but you can temper it so as not to scramble the gg and keep it milky and runny.
  • Oops, I have eaten about 6 of them since BFP.  Oh well, I am a living testimony that it is okay and you will survive!!

  • It's not something i would worry about. If it's store-bought, don't worry about it. In order to be shelf stable, the egg can't be raw. Many restaurants won't make it with raw egg either becasue of the risk.

I make my own Ceasar dressing at home and just buy the pasturized eggs.

  • Lots of dressings are made with raw egg though.  Mayo for example, most are processed to kill bacteria, etc.  I wouldn't worry about it.  Now a fresh made ceasar salad table side with the dressing made right in front of you, I would re-consider.

  • OMG I had no idea either! Dont feel bad this is my second and I didnt know.  I ate a side one a few weeks ago...but it all came up about an 1hr later.  So I guess your body knows what it doesnt need.
  • Some dressings also have anchovies

  • Most places don't make caesar dressing with raw egg anymore due to the chances of getting sick. I have a family recipe that I made last night... we substitute mayo for the egg, which I think most places do now.?
  • could be that some caeser dressings have anchovies in it yuck. I had a few caeser salads since i found out i'm fine so far. some books and people seem to think its not ok to eat cold lunch meat but my doctor said it was fine to eat.
  • Of course now I read this post! :) I had one last night and threw up EVERYTHING from the whole day.. it was pre packaged one in the grocery store.. damn
