So I have always thought I wanted a natural childbirth and if I were brave enough would even do an at home ( I want a nicu close by) so it was not an option for me. I even had a midwife when I first got pregnant but she was a disaster so I got rid of her and have my OB who is all for au natural labor and no c sections unless its for safety. Anyways I looked up Bradley classes tonight found a nice lady in my area its for 12 weeks once a week but here is the kicker its $315 dollars. Not that thats going to break the bank for DH and I but is it worth it? My sister says yes. What do you ladies think?
Re: Bradley class to do or not to do
I am going to bring an Enya CD and squeeze DH's balls to make myself feel better
No its not even because of some belief or convictions but I hate feeling loopy or drugged out and would rather have massive pain than feel out of it. I say at home just because I hate hospitals too. I am super sensitive to meds to after a bad car accident 3 years ago when I was hospitalized they gave me 2 vicodin and I fell on the floor when I tried to go potty OOPS
Yuck! They gave me something the last time I was in the hospital that made me feel like I was DYING. LIke, I thought I was having a heart attack. I think it was called dialudid or something like that.
I had DH write it down and keep it in his wallet so that we can make sure I never get it again!
There are some nasty drugs out there! Plus I kind of like pain it makes me feel like I am doing something. I THINK I have a high pain tolerance but I have never been in labor.
I did search around and in my area it seems to be the rate all of them said 315. I really like Bradley better than any other method too.
My hospital does one too and its only 90 I believe but its just a birthing class and my sister did it and said she learned just as much from watch birthday on discovery health. I think the Bradley method seems to be the best you should look into it. If I want drug free I am going to have to take a class and just break down and fork out the money. I won't be able to do it if I don't have a goal plan and know how to do it.
Biased here because we're signed up for them too. Ours were much less expensive (only $210 here), but I imagine it's because we live in a LCOL city (moved here from NorCal last summer and I tell you, thank goodness because I know we couldn't afford to start a family in CA).
I've just started reading the book but the metaphor they use is sort of like this:
Swimming is an activity that if you're trained to do you can do it well and safely, but for a non-swimmer, it can be dangerous to jump into deep water without any training. Birthing is similar...you can go natural without any training, but it's recommended that you get some training so you're prepared for the experience, especially if this is your first. Bottom line, our bodies are meant to give birth naturally, but our instincts to do it have been lost over time and taking these classes fills in that gap of knowledge.
My BFFs took Bradley Classes in CA and loved them too...they said meeting other couples preparing for birth was great not to mention all of the techniques they learned. The husband, in particular, was grateful to have attended the classes...he felt more confident in his ability to help his wife through L&D.

I also am a little biased about Bradley since we signed up for the classes too (only $250 in our LCOL area) and I think if you are planning on going naturally you need to do some prep that is more that just a saturday afternoon class. Studies show that when you learn, hear and do an action your body learns it and that is the purpose of the 12 week classes, to have repetition so when the big day comes your body will innately know what to do from the practice you put into it.
But I also dont think Bradley is the only way to go, have you read some literature about Bradley? Does it seem like a good fit for you and DH? I researched some info on hypnobirth and hyponobabies before deciding Bradley was more for us
As for the price my sister said most classes run from $215 to $330 depending on your area (she is in training to be a Bradley instructor) so I dont think that $315 is ridiculous GL!

I think it is worth it. I started my clas a month ago and really appreciate all of the information that I am learning. Consider that you do get more than an ordinary birthing class with information on breast feeding and after care of the baby as well as nutrition during pregnancy, relaxation techniques, exercises, and positions that will help you manage pain of contractions and delivery better. You will also learn about creating your birth plan and dealing with possible complications. I feel like the more I know the better prepared I will be.
Check with the instructor and see if they are willing to arrange a payment plan in order to not stress your finances all in one lump sum. Ours did that for us.
