Why are random people following me on Twitter?

I haven't posted on Twitter in months, and even when I was, it was VERY sporadic. I continue to get random people whose names I don't recognize following me. What is up with that?

I have never been on twitter, yet I get emails saying "so and so is now following you on twitter!" ?WTF? ?I never signed up for it so I am confused on what they are following.

For this reason I only post completely generic things on my twitter and save more specific stuff for my FB status since only my friends can see that.  Some of them are businesses who want you to notice them, some are spam/porn people who want you to click on their profile.  I block them all as soon as I notice them, and I just noticed twitter has a new button for "report as spam" so I've been using that.
