Preemies

Neocate ?s

I have preemie twins that both have GERD.  I'm hoping Neocate will help the situation.

1.  Were you able to get Neocate covered by insurance?

2.  Is it a thick formula?  The babies seem to be able to keep thicker formulas down.  We tried Nutrimigen and it was so thin, they kept spitting it up.

Re: Neocate ?s

  • one of my twins is on Neocate and it is covered by our insurance. Good thing too since I bought a few cans OOP and they are $46 each! I wouldn't say that it is a thick formula.

  • DS is on Neocate and it was covered by insurance.  Look at their website - they have a list of state resources and form letters for dealing with your insurance company.  In Mass they automatically cover it (you may have a co-pay depending on the insurance) until a year old and then prior authorization is needed.

Texas will be join the select few states that cover it on 1/1/10.

Hopefully you're insurance will cover it. DS is on EleCare and it's about the same as Neocate, but United HealthCare won't cover any formula even though he's got a g-tube.

  • My twins are on Neocate mixed to 30 calories and are fed through a G tube because they have such severer reflux/GERD.  It is covered by our insurance as per our state's law.  You can go to the Neocate website and they have a page dedicated to info for each state that has laws covering the cost of elemental formulas as well as other assistance programs if the your state doesn't have a law requiring insurance covers the cost of this formula.

It's not a thick formula, even when mixed to 30 calories and it may need to be thickened with something like rice cereal or Simply Thick.
