We're thinking we might have to take Miles to an ear, nose and throat specialist for this soon, because he just can't seem to shake this cough and congestion and he does not have pneumonia. His lungs are clear.
Pedi said the mouths and throats of many people with Down syndrome are often smaller than usual, meaning the adenoids take up more space in the back of the throat and can collect viruses/bacteria/etc. and make it harder to kick illnesses.
Though I hate the idea of him undergoing surgery at such a young age, it may be necessary to get him well again. Anyone have any experiences?
Re: Anyone's DC get their adenoids removed??
I had my T&A's out when I was 5. It was the best thing ever. E&B live on antibiotics through the winter for strep after strep after strep. Acutally Patrick too.
If I have things my way this winter, all three will have them out out out.
Poor little guy. I hope he gets over this without surgery, but if it's what makes him get better...you know.
Hey - my sister did when she was about ..err, 5? She had both tonsils & adenoids taken out because she had awful sinus issues/congestion and was a mouth breather because of it, plus snoring & apnea.
She's been fine ever since but still has lots of sinus infections.
I know it's not the same & she's not as young, but it was for the same basic reason and it did help, a LOT. The weird part, the doc didn't get all the tissue out & they grew back, she had to have them out twice. It doesn't happen often so no freak-outs allowed, k??? :-)
My child has had ear problems since birth really. She is 2.5 and just recently had her third set of tubes put in and this time the doctor decided to go ahead and take out her adenoids.
She was a mouth breather as well and that has since changed. Her adenoids were 80% blockage so she could not drain properly. Also after she had them taken out her nose dried up right away. She does still clear her throat often but I think it is out of habit now.
Good luck- They can take an xray to see if they are enlarged as well.
