So my DH loves the name Declan - before he said it and I started looking it up, I have never heard of it. Just coming to this board recently, I have seen mention of it a couple times. I tried searching, but the bump search sucksass and came up with nothing.
I am not too keen on the name, but curious as to what others think.

Re: Declan
It's my #1. DH is still thinking on it. It is one of those names you either really love or you don't. Since it's not a common name in the US (I heard it on this board and quite a bit while in Dublin) it can take a while for it to grow on someone.
There are a lot of other cute boy irish names that are a little more common that you could throw out there!

I must be slow because I have no clue how to pronounce it. Dee-clan? Deck-lan?
I actually like it - but I do think you have to be prepared to pronounce it for people. I just the baby naming wizard book and its awesome!! For Declan, it says:
Declan was an exclusively Irish name until the '90s. Its handsome, saintly style is now widely in demand and the name is popping up in the US. For now, though, its still exotic enough that you'll have to tutor friends on the pronunciation.
Its ranked #349 as of 2007 and Dex is listed as a nickname - Cute!
Similar names listed are Ronan (LOVE), Kieran, Blaine, Seamus & Griffin

Dex as a NN - interesting! Kieran and Seamus are also on our name lists, but DH thinks Kieran sounds too feminine. lol.
Thanks, ladies! Like I said, I have never heard of it until DH came home with it one day, but the more I think on it the less I hate it. Thats awful, I know, but I'm not hooked yet.
The pronounciation from what I have read is DECK-lan.
Deck-lan

DS is Declan, so obviously we love the name. I agree that it works best with an Irish last name or at least some Irish heritage. I'm 2nd generation Irish-American & DH is 1st generation. It's an old, old, Irish name & very well known in Ireland. I've known a couple of Declans IRL, but they were all born in Ireland. St. Declan was a contemporary of St. Patrick. Elvis Costello's real first name is Declan. The typical nn in Dublin is Decko, I've also heard Deck and Decky. Never heard Dex (as a pp mentioned), but I like it.
DS is 3.5 & in my area he's the only one we know. So, there's a lot of spelling it & correcting people's pronunciation, but it's not a big deal to me. But, I'm getting nervous that it will become the next Liam or Aidan. Soooo...I don't think you should use the name
I agree. An italian kid named Declan would be a tad strange!
after anovulatory diagnosis and TTC for 1 1/2yrs with several medicated cycles and one chemical pregnancy, we have our first bundle of joy!

I don't take one single minute for granted.
You do realize that it's not pronounced like "da-clan", right? It's DECK-lan.
*dies*
ditto...I really dislike it
